Im Won-hee doesn't have the face of a Korean TV heartthrob. His face is a map of expressions that look like they came out of a 1970s comic strip, and he knows it. Before stepping onto a film set, he spent years with the Mokhwa theater company. There he learned that comedy is a precision mechanism that leaves no room for miscalculation.
In 1998, he made his film debut in The Happenings. It was a small role under director Jang Jin. But it got the industry to notice his ability to hold a close-up without blinking. His look projected a strange mix of innocence and sharp-tongued attitude that audiences bought immediately.
And the gamble paid off.
His real turning point came in 2000 with the short film Dachimawa Lee. It was a wild parody of the action cinema made in Korea during the 1960s. Im played a spy with an impossible pompadour and over-the-top dialogue. The piece became a cult phenomenon online when the internet was still a frontier.
Despite his comedic flair, the industry demanded drama before it would take him seriously. In 2003, he joined the cast of Silmido. The film was a box office sensation in South Korea and surpassed ten million viewers. Im played one of the special commando soldiers and proved he could hold a rifle with the same credibility he brought to a joke.
But his big breakthrough came in 2007 with Le Grand Chef. He played Bong-joo, the antagonist competing to become the country's best chef. For this role, he had to learn professional knife techniques. Critics said his presence was the only thing keeping the film from sliding into cheap sentimentality.
Because Im always prefers restraint to embellishment.
In 2008, he revived his most famous character in the feature film Dachimawa Lee: Bye, Villain! Go to Hell!. It was an ambitious production shot on location in Switzerland and the United States. The movie didn't recoup its initial investment at the box office, but it cemented his status as a cult actor for a generation of moviegoers looking for something different from the usual melodrama.
Television gave him a second life when movies started taking themselves too seriously. In 2016, he accepted the role of Jang Gi-tae in the series Dr. Romantic. He played the administrative director of a rural hospital. The character was so successful that he returned for the seasons filmed in 2020 and 2023.
His work pace is steady. In 2017, he appeared in Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, one of the most expensive productions in his country's history. He played a prosecutor in the afterlife. He reprised the same role in the sequel, shot in 2018. He doesn't mind how big the part is as long as the script has a bit of bite.
He has never hidden his personal failures.
Since 2018, he has regularly appeared on the reality show My Little Old Boy, where he shows his daily life as a divorced man living alone. This public exposure has helped him stay relevant in a way many actors his age have lost. In 2023, he filmed the series Strong Girl Nam-soon, where he once again showed off his talent as an eccentric supporting player.
In 2024, her shooting schedule stayed packed, with three advertising contracts and two scripted projects for streaming platforms. Her per-episode fee remains steady, in line with top-tier supporting actors in Seoul.
