Shim Eun-kyung won the Best Actress award from the Academy of Japan's film industry in 2020. She was the first Korean actress to win this award. She earned it for her role in The Journalist, a film in which she played a reporter investigating a government scandal. But to reach that stage in Tokyo, she had to leave the comfort zone she had built in South Korea over more than a decade.
She started working at the age of ten. In 2004, she made her debut in the series The Woman Who Wants to Marry and soon became a familiar face in period television productions. Before turning twenty, she had already built up experience that many adult actors would envy. In 2011, she starred in Sunny. The film sold more than seven million tickets and placed her at the center of the Korean commercial film industry.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2014, she starred in Miss Granny. In this movie, she played a 70-year-old woman trapped in the body of a 20-year-old girl. The role demanded absolute physical control and a command of archaic language that surprised local critics. The film grossed more than $50 million in its home country alone. But Shim Eun-kyung felt her career was stalling in comic or supporting roles that were a cut above the rest.
In 2017, she decided to move to Japan. She didn't speak the language fluently and had no projects lined up. Many industry analysts called it a risky move, since it meant leaving the Korean market at the peak of her popularity. She spent her time studying Japanese intensively while looking for scripts that moved away from her previous image.
She accepted roles in independent films. In 2019, she shot Blue Hour alongside Kaho and won the Best Actress award at the Takasaki Film Festival. The Japanese industry praised her ability to convey emotion through silence and restraint. Little trace remains in her Japanese work of the exaggerated expressiveness from her early years in Seoul.
She was not seeking easy international fame.
In 2020, she took part in the series Seven Secretaries. The show's success on Japanese television led to a film adaptation that premiered in 2022. Shim Eun-kyung played a computer systems expert. The role let her work in a technical, cool register that contrasted sharply with her earlier work in Korea.
In 2023, she briefly returned to Korean television with a special appearance in The Good Bad Mother. It was a nod to her roots, but her professional schedule was already anchored in international projects. In 2024, she appeared in the Japanese film Stolen Identity 3. The production was shot under strict security protocols to prevent leaks about the trilogy's conclusion.
In 2025, The Box is scheduled to premiere on Netflix. The project's executive producers confirmed that principal photography wrapped in December with a budget of €12 million. The actress signed an exclusive promotional deal covering three Asian countries. Filming of her scenes took a total of forty-two working days.
