Wang Ji-hyun was fifteen years old when a friend convinced her to pose for a fashion magazine. It was 1997, and the Korean advertising market was looking for faces that broke with the classic aesthetic of previous decades. Her debut under the stage name Jun Ji-hyun was not a deeply personal choice but a suggestion from a producer who saw a commercial potential the young woman herself didn't yet recognize.
Before turning twenty, she was already a constant presence on television screens in Seoul. But her first major film role came with White Valentine in 1999. It was a quiet release that barely hinted at what would happen two years later.
And then Korean cinema changed.
In 2001, she starred in My Sassy Girl. The film made astronomical box office numbers across Asia, and theaters in Hong Kong and Japan filled up to see a heroine who hit her boyfriend and broke every mold of the submissive woman. It sold more than four million tickets in South Korea alone. That success was so massive that it shaped her career for the following decade, pushing her to seek roles that weren't mere shadows of that bold girl.
Many Asian actors try to break into the United States when they hit a ceiling in their home country. Jun Ji-hyun tried it in 2009 with the adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire. For this project, she adopted the Western name Gianna Jun and went through brutal physical training that included martial arts and sword handling.
The critics were merciless.
The international production flopped at the box office, and her next attempt in 2011 with Snow Flower and the Secret Fan also failed to connect with global audiences. It seemed her star was fading beyond Korean borders. Rather than pushing harder in Hollywood, however, she chose to return to the local industry to work with directors who understood her gift for physical comedy and restrained drama.
In 2012, she took a supporting role in the heist film The Thieves. She wasn't the lead, but her performance as a white-glove thief named Anycall stole every scene she appeared in. The film drew more than 12 million viewers and returned the actress to the top tier of her country's film industry.
Her return to television in 2013 with My Love from the Star was a sociological phenomenon. The clothes she wore on the show sold out at luxury stores within hours. From that point on, though, her strategy changed. She began spacing out her projects and choosing ones where the script carried more weight than personal showcase.
Because the industry demanded constant reinvention.
In 2015, she shot Assassination, a espionage drama set in the 1930s in which she played a resistance sniper. The shoot was demanding, requiring her to handle real period rifles weighing more than five kilos. She won the Best Actress award at the Grand Bell Awards for this role, confirming that her years as a young star had ended and paving the way for her to become an actress with serious dramatic weight.
In 2021, she joined the Netflix universe with the special episode Kingdom: Ashin of the North. Her performance was nearly silent, relying on her gaze and body language in a hostile world of zombies and political betrayal. That same year, she led the cast of the series Jirisan, a high-budget production that sparked debate over its use of visual effects in natural settings.
In 2025, she signed on to the espionage series North Star alongside actor Gang Dong-won. The project was directed by Kim Hee-won and had a per-episode budget that exceeded the average for standard cable television productions. That same year, a contract for an advertising campaign with a British fashion brand brought her estimated earnings of one billion won per year.
