Synopsis of Kingdom

In 1601, three years after the Imjin War, Crown Prince Lee Chang, played by Ju Ji-hoon, decides to investigate the strange illness afflicting the king. His inquiries lead him to uncover an epidemic that brings the dead back to life, in a fictional Joseon that today corresponds to Korea. While trying to stop the plague, he must deal with his political rivals, who are preparing ways to seize the throne. Lee Chang thus faces a double threat: saving the kingdom from the epidemic and keeping the crown out of the wrong hands. Created by Kim Eun-hee and broadcast on Netflix, the series blends political thriller with zombie horror and places its characters before an urgent decision.

Trivia about Kingdom

The series went over budget, and each episode cost more than 1.78 million dollars. As a result, the first two seasons were cut from the planned eight episodes to six.

Before the series, Kim Eun-hee created the webcomic The Kingdom of the Gods with illustrator Yang Kyung-il in 2014, although the two works share little beyond their basic concepts.

Actor Song Joong-ki was courted for the lead role but turned it down. Before its confirmation, Ju Ji-hoon, Ryu Seung-ryong and Bae Doona were in talks to star in the series.

The first season has a 94% positive review rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 17 critics and an average score of 8.2/10.

The set of the special episode Ashin of the North suffered a fire in January 2021, when a crew member tried to melt snow with a torch. No one was injured.

The New York Times included Kingdom among the best international series of 2020, according to a list compiled by the American press.

Netflix has never confirmed a third season or declared "Kingdom" canceled; since the premiere of "Ashin of the North" in July 2021, the series' future has remained without an announced date.

The series won the Best Drama award at the 2019 Asia Contents Awards, and Ju Ji-hoon won the Best Actor award at the same ceremony.
