Trivia about The Silent Sea

Netflix announced in December 2019 that it would produce the series, adapted from a 2014 short film directed by Choi Hang-yong, who would also direct the series.

Bae Doona and Gong Yoo were cast in the lead roles in April 2020, and in September Heo Sung-tae and Lee Moo-saeng joined them.

The title The Silent Sea comes from the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon, as the series' own description explains.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of the 15 critic reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.60/10.

Filming took place from September 22, 2020 to March 31, 2021, according to the production credits published for the series.

Director Choi Hang-yong acknowledged that the depiction of lunar gravity drew criticism for lacking realism, and explained that recreating the entire base in low gravity was not feasible during production.

"The Silent Sea" reached the No. 1 spot on Netflix's weekly non-English TV list, with 47.8 million hours viewed between December 27, 2021 and January 2, 2022.

The production cost approximately 27,000 million won, or about 20 million dollars, according to an estimate cited in an interview with its stars.
