Lio Tipton was skating before anyone knew their name. By age two they were already strapping on blades, and by sixteen they were competing in national championships across the United States. The rigid discipline of elite sport became the foundation for a career nobody saw coming from the runways of Los Angeles.
In 2008, she took part in the show America's Next Top Model. She finished in third place, but that TV showcase helped her sign with Ford Models and start working in commercials. Modeling was a way to pay the bills while she looked for a real foothold in acting.
And the gamble paid off.
Her first break came that same year with a cameo in the comedy The Big Bang Theory. It was a small role, but enough to realize her future lay not in the runway but in Hollywood scripts. Tipton decided to put modeling on the back burner to focus exclusively on the film auditions that were starting to emerge in California.
Her mass recognition came in 2011 with Crazy, Stupid, Love. She played a teenage babysitter obsessed with the character played by Steve Carell, and held her own opposite veteran actor Julianne Moore. That role gave her a chance to break out of the pretty-face typecast, because she brought a very specific vulnerability to the screen.
That same year, they took part in The Green Hornet under the direction of Michel Gondry. It was a complex shoot, but it gave them a close look at how a big-budget blockbuster works. Still, independent film remained their natural comfort zone.
In 2013, she starred in Warm Bodies alongside Nicholas Hoult. The film mixed romance and zombies with a satirical tone that suited her dry, direct acting style perfectly. The movie grossed more than $116 million worldwide and gave her the financial security to choose projects with greater creative freedom.
But film doesn't forgive stagnation.
For 2014, she headlined the cast of the series Manhattan Love Story. ABC's show failed to connect with audiences and was canceled after only eleven episodes aired. It was a hard blow that forced her to rethink her strategy on the small screen and to seek more complex characters in independent film.
In June 2021, she announced her identity as a nonbinary person through her social media. This personal step coincided with a stage of professional maturity in which ingenue roles began to fade away. Tipton asked that they/them pronouns be used and began working on productions that reflected greater emotional complexity.
In 2022, she shot the miniseries A Friend of the Family. In this project, she played Gail Berchtold and dove into a true story of manipulation and abuse that called for a dramatic tone far removed from her roots in romantic comedy. It was a technical job where the body language control she inherited from figure skating once again became her best tool.
Because the body has memory.
In 2024, her involvement in the film adaptation of The Edge of Sleep was confirmed. The project is based on a hugely popular horror podcast and marks her return to the psychological thriller genre in a leading role. Filming took place on location in British Columbia with an estimated budget of $10 million.
