The Swimmer Who Didn't Want to Be a Star

So Ji-sub never sought the spotlight. His obsession as a teenager was professional swimming, and he competed at the national level for eleven years. In 1995, he took a modeling job for the clothing brand STORM just because he wanted to meet his idol, rapper Kim Sung-jae. But his family's financial needs weighed more than his sporting ambitions at that time.

But money was what mattered.

Her early years in Korean television were difficult because her look didn't fit the beauty standards of the nineties. Casting directors told her that her eyes were too small and that she would never get anywhere in the industry. In 2002, she starred in Glass Slippers, and audiences began to notice that serious type who conveyed a natural, effortless sadness.

The turning point came in 2004 with the drama I’m Sorry, I Love You. That series became a social phenomenon in Asia and set a style of its own that thousands of young people copied on the streets of Seoul. So Ji-sub played a man with a bullet lodged in his head, and that performance earned him recognition from international critics. The series reached peak viewership of 29% in its home country.

Guerrilla Filmmaking and Financial Risks

After completing his mandatory military service between 2005 and 2007, the actor made a decision that puzzled his agency. He turned down commercial projects to shoot Rough Cut in 2008 under the direction of Jang Hoon. The film did not have enough budget to pay his usual fee. So So Ji-sub decided to invest his own money in the production and work without a fixed salary in exchange for a share of the profits.

And the gamble paid off.

The film was a box office hit and allowed him to found his own talent agency, called 51K. From that platform, he began importing foreign films into South Korea that had no commercial distribution. In 2009, he funded the arrival in Korean cinemas of European titles and independent American productions. He wasn't chasing immediate profit but aiming to educate his local audience's taste.

In 2011, he filmed the romantic drama Always, playing a retired boxer. For the role, he trained for months with professionals and filmed the fight scenes without stunt doubles. The film opened the Busan International Film Festival that year, and tickets sold out in just seven seconds, breaking every previous record for the festival.

The Shift in Register and Technical Maturity

Many actors get stuck in drama, but So Ji-sub went for physical comedy in 2013 with Master’s Sun. It was a romantic comedy with horror touches, where he proved he could handle comic timing without losing his composure. In 2015, he had another TV hit with Oh My Venus, for which he had to follow a strict diet and lose seven kilos of muscle mass to fit the profile of a personal trainer.

In 2017, he took part in the historical blockbuster The Battleship Island. The shoot was a physical ordeal for the entire cast because of the weather conditions and the demanding action scenes in the mine. The film sold more than six million tickets in its first weeks in Korean theaters.

There was no turning back.

In 2020, he married TV host Cho Eun-jung after meeting during a promotional interview. During that period, he stepped back from big commercial projects to focus on the mystery thriller Confession, which premiered in 2022 after several delays caused by the global health situation. In the film, he played a murder suspect locked in a room with his lawyer.

In 2022, he returned to science fiction with Alienoid by Choi Dong-hoon and starred in the legal drama Doctor Lawyer for the network MBC. In 2024, he signed with Netflix to lead the cast of Mercy for None (also known as Plaza Wars), a criminal action series based on a popular webtoon. The series had an estimated budget of 15 million dollars for its first season.
