The Casting That Blew Up Anonymity

Kim Tae-ri auditioned alongside 1,500 other hopefuls in 2014. Park Chan-wook was looking for a fresh face for The Handmaiden, and she had barely any professional experience beyond university theater. She was chosen for her direct gaze and a presence that didn't shrink in front of the veterans on set.

Before making it to the big screen, she spent years building stages and working on lighting for a theater company in Seoul. She studied Journalism and Communication at Kyung Hee University, but her real passion was the stage. In 2016, the premiere of The Handmaiden at the Cannes Film Festival put her under the spotlight of international critics overnight.

And the gamble paid off.

That role earned them recognition as Best New Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards that same year. But the most significant thing was their ability to avoid being typecast in art-house cinema after working with a director of that caliber. In 2018 they shot Little Forest, a film adapted from a Japanese manga that demanded a much slower, more naturalistic style.

Conquering the small screen

Her move to television came in 2018 with Mr. Sunshine, a high-budget production written by Kim Eun-sook. She played a noblewoman who becomes a sniper during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The series reached ratings above 18% in its final episode and proved that her name could draw a large mainstream audience.

She tends to choose projects sparingly because she prefers to study the script for months. In 2021, she starred in Space Sweepers, South Korea's first major space sci-fi blockbuster with global distribution. The shoot was complex, relying heavily on chroma key and digital effects, and she played Captain Jang.

But her massive breakthrough came in 2022 with Twenty-Five Twenty-One.

At age 32, she played a fencer from 18, and audiences accepted the change in age without question. For this role, she won Best Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards in 2022, an honor that usually goes to people with far more experience in the television industry. The performance moved away from the dramatic intensity of her early work to embrace carefully measured physical comedy.

Technical Risks and Genre Shifts

In 2022 and 2024 they took part in both installments of Alienoid under the direction of Choi Dong-hoon. It is a saga that mixes time travel, traditional magic and aliens, with a production design that exceeded 30 million dollars. Kim Tae-ri performed much of their action scenes without stunt doubles to add realism to the combat movements with ancient weapons.

Not everything in her career has been commercial success. Filming the horror series Revenant in 2023 took a serious physical toll because of the long night shoots. In this production, she had to play two distinct personalities in one body, drawing on body-language techniques she learned in her early theater days to set apart the protagonist from the demon possessing her.

In 2024, she starred in Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born, for which she had to learn traditional Korean singing for more than a year before filming began.

The international distribution deal for this series was closed with Disney+ for an amount that has not been officially disclosed.
