The Man Who Hated Musicals

Richard Armitage spent six months with a circus in Budapest to earn his professional actor's card. He wasn't chasing applause under the big top but the accreditation needed to perform on UK stages in the early nineties. Before becoming the face of period drama, he worked on productions of Cats, where he hid beneath layers of makeup and wigs.

That period in musical theater was a quiet torment. The actor has confessed on several occasions that he was uncomfortable with dancing and that his true goal was pure acting. So he decided to step back and return to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to restart his path from scratch.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2002, he landed a supporting role in the series Sparkhouse, but two years later his life changed completely. In 2004, the BBC premiered its adaptation of North & South, and the character of John Thornton catapulted him out of obscurity. The broadcaster's website crashed under the flood of viewer messages after the first episode aired.

The Weight of Dwarven Gold

British television absorbed him for five years, with characters that showcased his serious image and deep voice. Between 2006 and 2009, he brought Guy of Gisborne to life in Robin Hood, where he wore black leather under the Hungarian sun. But his arrival on Spooks in 2008 was what allowed him to explore a more physical and psychological range over three seasons.

Peter Jackson was chosen by him to lead the Erebor expedition in 2010. To play Thorin Oakenshield in the The Hobbit trilogy, filmed between 2011 and 2013, the actor had to carry thirty kilos of costume and prosthetics during twelve-hour days. The daily makeup process took three hours before the cameras started rolling.

That New Zealand experience gave him a global visibility he had never actively sought. But Armitage didn't move to Los Angeles to chase superhero blockbusters. He preferred to return to the stage in 2014 to headline The Crucible at London's Old Vic, with a performance that earned him an Olivier Award nomination.

Because the stage was always his main refuge.

The Voice and the Printed Page

His career took a turn toward psychological thrillers with the series Hannibal in 2015. Playing Francis Dolarhyde required a physical transformation, including fake tattoos covering his entire back. It was a niche role that allowed him to move definitively away from the romantic leading man image he had carried since his early days in public television.

In the following years, he became a regular name in Harlan Coben adaptations on streaming platforms. He starred in The Stranger in 2020 and Stay Close in 2021, building a profile as an ordinary man trapped in dark conspiracies. His voice became a financial asset thanks to recording dozens of audiobooks and projects for Audible.

That relationship with the spoken word led him to professional writing. In 2023, he published his first novel, Geneva, a thriller that began as an audio project before reaching bookstores. Armitage did not hand the writing over to ghostwriters and spent months structuring the plot around biotechnology and family secrets.

In 2024, he starred in the thriller Red Eye for ITV, playing a doctor escorted on a flight to China. The production was shot almost entirely on a set replicating an Airbus A350 in a London studio. The series' international distribution deal was closed for more than five million pounds before its official premiere.
