Building an unusual physique

Kim Woo-bin stands 1.88 tall and has eyebrows that look like they were drawn with malicious intent. He started out walking the runways at Seoul Fashion Week in 2009 under his real name, Kim Hyun-joong. But the fashion world soon became too small for him.

Television was calling him.

In 2011, he made his debut in the mystery drama White Christmas. He appeared with fiery red hair and an aggressive attitude that caught Korean viewers off guard. He was not the typical soft-featured heartthrob who dominated the industry at the time.

His true breakout came in 2013 with School 2013. In that series, he played a teenager haunted by his past, and his chemistry with Lee Jong-suk drove the story. That role earned him his first major recognition as Best New Actor at the APAN Star Awards that same year.

Shortly after, he filmed The Heirs, where his role as a rich kid and high school bully at times overshadowed the lead. Audiences connected with the vulnerability hidden behind his arrogant facade. It was at that point that he decided his definitive stage name would be Kim Woo-bin, to separate his private life from his professional one.

The forced break of 2017

Just as his film career was taking off with titles like The Con Artists in 2014 and Master in 2016, everything came to a sudden halt. In May 2017, his agency announced that the actor had nasopharyngeal cancer. He was 27 years old.

The silence lasted for months.

He disappeared from public life to undergo radiotherapy and several surgeries. During that time, his fans only received news through brief statements or stolen photos showing him looking thinner. The industry assumed he would take years to return, if he ever did.

But his comeback came in 2019 at a film awards ceremony. He appeared more mature and calmer than before. That mandatory break changed the way he chose his scripts, prioritizing stories with greater emotional weight or projects that let him have fun without the pressure of instant success.

Returning to large-scale productions

In 2022, he returned to work in a big way. He took part in the series Our Blues, a production filmed on Jeju Island in which he played a simple, kind-hearted ship captain. It was a complete change of pace from the dark characters that made him famous in his youth.

That same year, he released the ambitious science fiction film Alienoid. The shoot for this movie lasted more than a year and marked his return to special effects and complex action choreography.

The gamble paid off.

In 2023, he starred in Black Knight, a dystopian series in which he played a legendary delivery man in a world without oxygen. The production required intense physical training to regain the shape needed after his long recovery. The shoot took place in digital desert settings to recreate a post-apocalyptic South Korea.

In 2024, he premiered the action film Officer Black Belt on streaming platforms, where he plays a martial arts expert who works with the police. For this role, he had to gain weight and dye his hair blond to create a tougher image. The actor currently has an advertising contract with a Swiss luxury watch brand that generates millions of euros a year.

His official height is still listed as 188 centimeters.
