Shin Min-a never set out to become an actress. In 1998 she won a modeling contest for the youth magazine KiKi and spent three years posing for photographers before someone put a script in front of her. Her debut in 2001 with the film Volcano High was a special-effects experiment that proved a box office hit in South Korea.
Modeling was only the prologue.
But early-2000s cinema didn't quite know where to place her profile. In 2005, she worked under Kim Jee-woon in A Bittersweet Life, and that gangster film pulled her away from her image as a cheerful teenager. The role was brief but essential to the plot. That year her name began to resonate at international film festivals, moving past her background as an advertising face.
And the industry took notice.
In 2010 came the project that changed how the general public saw her. She starred in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and the series was a ratings phenomenon across Asia. That story about a nine-tailed fox made her the queen of television commercials in Seoul. She signed image contracts with more than twenty brands at the same time in a single fiscal year.
Between 2015 and 2019, her work pace dropped sharply. She prioritized her personal life after her partner's cancer diagnosis, and that absence from the screen left a void that the media filled with speculation. She returned with Chief of Staff in 2019, playing an ambitious politician. It was a smart move because it broke away from the naive-woman roles that had typecast her for a decade.
Sometimes silence is the best career strategy.
In 2021, she starred in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, and the series made it onto the most-watched lists worldwide on streaming platforms. Filming took place on the coast of Pohang, and her chemistry with the cast brought Shin Min-a back to the top tier of television drama. The series reached a 12.6% audience share in its final episode, a very high figure for cable television in South Korea.
The following year she appeared in Our Blues, an ensemble production filmed on Jeju Island in 2022. In this project she played a mother struggling with clinical depression. It was a restrained, understated performance that avoided the genre's usual dramatic excess.
In 2023 she released the film Our Season, in which she explored the mother-child bond from a fantasy perspective. Local critics praised the fact that Shin Min-a was no longer chasing aesthetic showmanship but the depth of supporting characters. Her per-episode fee remained among the highest in the industry throughout that period of transition toward more mature roles.
In 2024, she led the cast of the romantic comedy No Gain No Love for the cable network tvN. The project did well with young audiences and reinforced her ability to carry light stories without losing credibility. Because she knows the business demands alternating prestige drama with pure entertainment.
Her fee per project in 2024 reflects that hierarchy.
The production of her next project, titled The Price of Confession, was scheduled for 2025. In this thriller she will share the screen with Kim Go-eun under the direction of Lee Jung-hyo. Filming for this suspense series wrapped her work schedule for the first half of the decade. In 2025, the actress will mark twenty-seven years of uninterrupted professional career since that first beauty pageant.
