The Weight of Evolutionary Psychology

Lee Si-won holds a master’s degree in evolutionary psychology from Seoul National University. It’s a fact that often comes up before her filmography because it shapes the way she approaches scripts. In 2012 she debuted in the historical drama The King’s Dream. It was a small role, but it showed that her profile fit period productions.

In Korea, academic pedigree is under close scrutiny. She used that image of a smart woman to land projects that required a specific seriousness. But she didn’t want to be trapped in the stereotype of the perfect student. So in 2014 she accepted a role in the horror film The Tunnel to explore more aggressive physical roles.

And the gamble paid off.

Her career was built on supporting roles that stole scenes from the leads. In 2015 she appeared in Who Are You: School 2015. There she played a health teacher who brought calm to a plot full of teen conflicts. It was an exercise in restraint that the industry rewarded with more calls from casting directors.

The Breakup in Granada

In 2018 she filmed Memories of the Alhambra. Her character was Lee Soo-jin, the ex-wife of the lead played by Hyun Bin. Shooting in Spain posed logistical and technical challenges because of the constant use of digital effects. She had to act opposite nothing in many augmented reality sequences.

It was a real test of her technical patience.

Acting with a green screen behind you demands complete control of your gaze. On that project she showed she could carry the emotional drama while production focused on the visual fireworks. That same year she took part in the Korean version of Suits. She played Kang Se-hee and returned to that world of offices and rapid-fire dialogue that her audience loves so much.

In 2020 she joined the cast of Tell Me What You Saw. It was a dark thriller where aesthetics mattered more than dialogue. She played Han I-seul in a serial killer plot that moved her decisively away from the sweet image of her early days. Korean audiences began to see her as a character actress.

The Reality TV Board

In 2023, her name went global thanks to The Devil’s Plan. It was a Netflix strategy show in which twelve contestants had to survive through logic and alliances. Lee Si-won didn’t just take part. She designed strategies that knocked out far more aggressive players than she was.

There was no script.

Her time on the show was a lesson in applied psychology. She got international audiences interested in her personal side and her analytical ability. But she chose to return to scripted television quickly. In 2023 she played Lee A-ra in the series Maestra: Strings of Truth, a story about secrets inside a symphony orchestra.

In 2021 she married a doctor after a discreet courtship. She keeps her private life under strict control, breaking that silence only to talk about her inventions. That’s because Lee Si-won has registered several commercial patents related to the design of everyday objects. She is an inventor who sees film as an extension of her scientific curiosity.

The run of Maestra: Strings of Truth ended its broadcast in January 2024 after twelve episodes filmed entirely in Seoul.
