Choi Jung-woo was born in 1957 and belongs to that breed of actors who don't need a leading role to own a scene. He started on the theater stage during the 1970s. There he learned that silence can communicate far more than a poorly delivered scream.
In 2005 he appeared in Lady Vengeance under the direction of Park Chan-wook. It was a small role, but it got casting directors in Seoul to put his name on their list of must-have supporting actors. His ability to play powerful, dark men opened the doors of commercial television to him for good.
But his career isn't built on luck.
Because Choi Jung-woo is a tireless worker who chains together shoots with barely any time off. In 2011 he played Chun Jae-man in City Hunter and got half the country to hate his character. That is his greatest achievement. He makes viewers forget the actor and focus on the impeccable suit of whichever villain he's playing.
In the years following 2010, he specialized in roles as corporate executives and politicians with hidden agendas. In 2013 he appeared in Master's Sun, playing Secretary Kim. It was an interesting change of pace because it showed a much kinder, more protective side (a relief for his public image at the time).
And audiences responded with affection.
Despite his age, he maintains a work pace that would exhaust any twentysomething. In 2014 he appeared in Doctor Stranger, and in 2017 he joined the cast of Beyond the Clouds. His technique is built on economy of gestures. He doesn't need grand gestures to convey authority or fear.
Many young actors ask him for advice on set. But he prefers to stay in the background and let his work speak for him. He has appeared in more than sixty television series since his debut on the small screen.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Sisyphus: The Myth, bringing seasoned experience to a complex science fiction plot. New genres don't scare him. He adapts to what the script demands without imposing his ego on other people's stories.
In 2024, he shot The Brave Yong Soo-jung, playing Joo Myung-chul. That same year, he also appeared in the series Under the Gun. He remains a key figure for national networks like MBC and SBS because he guarantees technical reliability on every shot.
His professional profile on South Korea's specialized databases lists a total of 84 credits in TV dramas through the end of 2024.
