Cheon Ho-jin entered the Korean film industry in 1983 with the movie Street of Desire. He was no ordinary newcomer, carrying the weight of being the son of Cheon Gyu-deok, one of the legends of professional wrestling in South Korea. But young Ho-jin didn't want to fight in a ring; he wanted to do it in front of the cameras.
The father's shadow was far too long.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, they honed their craft in supporting roles that showcased an athletic build and a gaze that was already unsettling. They studied chemistry at Inha University but left the books behind to focus on acting. That decision changed their career path and allowed them to avoid the athletic future their family had expected of them.
Before he turned thirty, he had already mastered disciplines such as taekwondo and judo. These skills allowed him to perform action scenes without stunt doubles in his early projects. In 1986, he won the Best New Actor award at the Baeksang Arts Awards for his work in the TV drama The Dew on the Grass.
The turn of the century was good for their career. In 2004, they appeared in Once Upon a Time in High School as a domineering, militaristic father. This role defined an archetype they would repeat with variations over the following two decades. Cheon has a deep voice that instantly lends gravity to any noir script.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2006, they worked under Yoo Ha in A Dirty Carnival. There they played President Hwang, a white-collar gangster who pulls the strings from the shadows. This performance is essential to understanding Korean cinema of that era (a period of creative explosion and aesthetic violence). Their ability to shift from calm to threat without moving a single facial muscle guaranteed them steady work at major studios.
But it wasn't all gangster films. In 2010, he joined the cast of The Unjust and the disturbing I Saw the Devil. In the latter, he played Section Chief Oh, a role that demanded complete restraint in the face of the story's brutality. The film grossed more than $12 million worldwide and became a cult favorite among fans of extreme thrillers.
Despite their success on the big screen, their greatest popular impact came through television. In 2017, they starred in the family drama My Golden Life. The series was a sociological phenomenon in South Korea and reached a viewership rating of 45.1% in its final episode. Cheon Ho-jin played a father who sacrifices his dignity for his children's well-being in a suffocating economic system.
This role earned them the Grand Prize (Daesang) at that year's KBS Drama Awards. It was a recognition of their veteran status and their ability to connect with Korean working-class audiences. As a result, their reputation was no longer just cinematic; it became a figure respected by every generation of viewers.
In 2021, they joined the cast of Beyond Evil, a psychological thriller that won the Baeksang Award for Best Drama. They played Police Chief Nam Sang-bae, and their character served as the moral anchor in a story full of twists and betrayals. On set, they're known for being professional and quiet (they rarely ask for retakes unless the framing is off).
Their appearance in the political series The Whirlwind in 2024 marked their return to high-stakes drama under the direction of Kim Yong-wan. Filming for this Netflix production stretched across several months on locations in Seoul. Cheon Ho-jin played the presidential chief of staff for a per-episode fee that ranks among the highest of actors in their generation.
