Juri Ueno wasn't looking for the spotlight of the Japanese industry. In fact, she was initially interested in athletics, but an audition for a cosmetics brand in 2001 completely changed her path. Her real debut came in 2003 with Chirusoku no Natsu. But it was the saxophone role in Swing Girls in 2004 that blew up her anonymity. Her portrayal of a lazy student earned her the Japan Academy Award for Best Newcomer.
And then the chaos of success arrived.
In 2006, she accepted the role of Megumi Noda in the adaptation of Nodame Cantabile. It was a risky decision, since the character verged on constant caricature in the original manga. But Ueno brought a strange physicality and guttural noises that weren't in the script. Audiences became obsessed with her chemistry with Hiroshi Tamaki.
That craze lasted four years, including two final films shot in Europe in 2009 and 2010. But the Japanese industry is voracious and typecasts quickly. To avoid stagnation, she accepted the role of a woman with gender identity disorder in Last Friends during 2008. She cut her hair and lowered her voice to move away from romantic comedy.
In 2011, she starred in the NHK historical drama Gō: Himetachi no Sengoku. The reviews were harsh at first because her naturalistic style clashed with the rigid conventions of the period genre. She didn't give in to pressure from producers. Instead, she gave her character a modern humanity that eventually won over the less conservative critics.
Freedom comes with a contractual price.
After years under the umbrella of the giant agency Amuse, she decided to break her contract in 2022 to manage her own career. This independence allowed her to choose more restrained projects such as Asagao: Medical Examiner. In this series, she played a forensic pathologist over several seasons between 2019 and 2022. The show's tone was dry and avoided the usual melodrama of hospital dramas.
In 2023, she returned to television with the Japanese version of Hyena. She played an aggressive lawyer who used methods bordering on illegal to win cases. Far from the sweetness of her early days, she sought a harder aesthetic and a performance built on rapid-fire dialogue. Her creative independence translated into total control over the scripts she accepted.
In 2024, she appeared in the film Neighboring Next Door, directed by Naoto Kumazawa. The production had a tight budget of ¥150 million and was shot mainly on location in Kanto Prefecture. Ueno personally oversaw part of the wardrobe to ensure her character felt realistic.
Filming wrapped two days ahead of schedule due to the production schedule's demands.
The actress has kept a small work structure since leaving the major agencies. In 2024, her schedule focused on collaborations with sustainable fashion brands and auteur film projects. International distribution of her latest work was handled through streaming platforms with regional exclusivity contracts. Filming for her most recent outdoor project lasted exactly twenty-two days of twelve hours each.
