Jurnee Smollett didn't need acting school to win over New York critics at just ten years old. In 1997, she starred in Eve's Bayou and immediately put her name on the map of American independent film. It was a raw, direct debut that avoided the usual mannerisms of child actors of the era.
Talent came standard.
She grew up in a family where show business was the first language, and her five siblings also hung around television sets. But she had a different presence in front of the camera, one that let her convey a maturity unusual for her age. Throughout the 1990s she alternated family comedies with dramas, where her intensity always seemed too big for the scripts she was given.
In 2007, she shot The Great Debaters under the direction of Denzel Washington. That project demanded a level of dramatic restraint that ended up defining her acting style in the years that followed. She wasn't after easy applause but the truth of characters living on the margins of American society.
For several years she piled up supporting roles in TV series until she landed Friday Night Lights in 2009. There she played Jess Merriweather and showed she could hold her own in ensemble dramas alongside more seasoned actors. Then came the phenomenon of True Blood in 2013, where she explored fantasy with surprising ease.
But her real breakthrough in prestige came with Lovecraft Country in 2020. Her role as Leti Lewis earned her an Emmy nomination and a legion of fans who discovered her talent for blending racial horror with pure action. In that series, Smollett stopped being a promise and became an undeniable force in American television.
And the industry took note of her physical power.
In 2020, she suited up to play Black Canary in Birds of Prey. It was a physical gamble that demanded months of martial arts training and tight control of her voice for the musical scenes. The film wasn't the massive hit the studio hoped for, but most analysts agreed her performance was the best part of the movie.
Smollett decided she didn't want to limit herself to waiting for her agent's calls and crossed over to the other side of the camera. She signed a production deal with HBO to develop her own stories and have creative control over the narratives that interested her. She has always argued that Black actresses should hold the keys to their own stories.
The industry no longer dictated the rules to her.
In 2023, she shared the screen with Tommy Lee Jones and Jamie Foxx in The Burial. The legal drama performed solidly on streaming platforms and confirmed that she could hold her own against Oscar winners without losing an ounce of intensity. Her portrayal of a relentless lawyer avoided grandiose speeches and focused on the technical precision of legal language.
While filming The Order in 2024, she got caught up in a suspenseful thriller about white supremacist groups in the 1980s. The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival to notable critical praise for the restraint of its cast. In this project, Smollett once again proved she prefers complex, layered characters over the flat, by-the-book heroines.
The production of this latest film had a budget of $30 million.
