Kamal Haasan won his first presidential gold medal at age six for Kalathur Kannamma. The year was 1960, and that boy born in Paramakudi had no idea he would end up obsessed with latex prosthetics and 300-page screenplays. His family pushed him toward the stage, but he preferred to understand how the camera worked from an early age.
During the 1970s, his encounter with director K. Balachander changed the way he understood the craft. He shot nearly thirty films in just three years to learn the mechanics of drama and physical comedy. He wasn't chasing the easy applause of the traditional action hero that dominated Tamil cinema at the time.
He wanted to be the best actor in the country, not the best-looking one.
In 1983, he starred in Moondram Pirai, playing a teacher who looks after a woman with infantile amnesia. His performance earned him his first National Film Award and showed that his expressive ability was well above that of his contemporaries. But massive commercial success was not enough for his technical ambitions.
In 1987, he starred in Nayakan under the direction of Mani Ratnam. International critics compared his work to that of Marlon Brando in El padrino: The Latin Godfather for the depth he gave the character of Velu Nayakar across the decades. That year, the film made international lists as one of the best works of the century.
But Haasan didn't stop at social drama. In 1996, he played an elderly vigilante in Indian, wearing imported prosthetics from the United States that took hours to apply to his face. He spent much of his personal fortune bringing Hollywood technicians in for projects no one in India dared to finance.
And the gamble paid off.
He founded his own production company, Raaj Kamal Films International, to have full control over his stories. He did so because the Madras studio system felt far too rigid for his experiments. In 2008, he played ten different roles in Dasavathaaram (including George W. Bush) in a display of characterization that bordered on technical madness.
In 2000, he wrote and directed Hey Ram, a dense work about the partition of India that nearly ruined him financially. The film did not perform in theaters, but it became a cult title among screenwriting and technical film scholars for its nonlinear editing. Haasan has always preferred the respect of camera operators to that of the industry's accountants.
After several years focused on politics with his own party, founded in 2018, he returned to the big screen with unusual force. In 2022, he released Vikram, breaking box office records in South India with a dark espionage plot. The film grossed more than 50 million dollars in a market still feeling the effects of theater closures.
In 2024, he took part in the science fiction production Kalki 2898 AD, playing an antagonist role that required a total physical transformation through digital effects and real makeup. His pay for this brief appearance exceeded the entire budget of many B-movies from the previous decade.
He was only seeking the character's physical perfection.
Production of Indian 2 in 2024 suffered multiple delays due to on-set accidents and legal problems that stretched filming over more than five years. The final cost of the film reached 250 million rupees, just in post-production and visual effects work done at foreign studios.
