Kate Jackson was never meant to be an angel. In 1976, the actress convinced Aaron Spelling to change the title of the series The Alley Cats to Charlie's Angels, because she found it far more appealing. She understood the business better than her bosses did.
Her training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts gave her an intellectual edge over the rest of the cast. Jackson had already worked on The Rookies and knew the industry's rhythms. But she wanted more than to appear on bedroom posters across half the world.
And the gamble paid off.
During the first three seasons, Jackson refused to pose in a swimsuit. While her co-stars followed the most aggressive marketing guidelines, she demanded scripts with more dramatic weight. That firmness earned her the nickname "the smart angel" (though she preferred to be called simply an actress).
In 1979, the series' producer barred her from accepting the lead role in Kramer vs. Kramer so as not to disrupt the shooting schedule. Meryl Streep took the role and the Oscar. Jackson left the series shortly after, fed up with the creative limits and the one-sided contracts.
It was her biggest professional mistake.
The failure of that lost train didn't stop her. In 1983, Jackson took control of her own career by starring in and producing The Scarecrow and Mrs. King. This time she wasn't a salaried employee; she managed budgets and made executive decisions.
Her production company, Shoot the Moon, helped shape a series that blended espionage with domestic comedy. Jackson played Amanda King (a divorced mother who ends up working for an intelligence agency) and insisted that the character have real development. She didn't want to be just another decorative eye candy on her résumé.
The series stayed on the air until 1987, enjoying steady success. During those years, Jackson had to juggle 16-hour workdays with her first serious health problems. In 1987, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo emergency surgery.
Silence took hold.
After beating the disease twice, Jackson decided to step away from the Hollywood noise. In 1989, she starred in the TV movie Baby M and earned an Emmy nomination. But the industry's pace no longer fit her new outlook on life.
The nineties and the early 2000s were a period of sporadic appearances. In 2007, she appeared in an episode of Criminal Minds, playing the mother of Agent Prentiss. It was her last credited on-screen role to date.
Jackson decided to sell her Beverly Hills property and moved to a farm in Virginia in search of a total break from the spotlight. But her peace was shattered by outside financial troubles. In 2010, the actress sued her financial advisor, claiming his mistakes had cost her three million dollars of her fortune.
That same year, she announced she was writing her memoir, titled The Smart One. The book has faced constant delays and release date changes at American publishers. In 2024, its publication is still pending a final date for release.
Jackson lives in seclusion at her Keswick residence, far from any public events or reunions with former cast members. In 2010, her legal settlement with her financial advisor was concluded under strict confidentiality clauses.
