Kevin Peter Hall stood exactly 6 feet 7 inches tall. That height shaped his life and forced him to work almost always hidden under suffocating layers of latex. In 1987, he put on a 200-pound suit to hunt Arnold Schwarzenegger in the jungles of Mexico. No one saw his face on screen, but his movements defined a creature that still generates millions in revenue today.
And he did it out of pure technical necessity.
Before making it to Hollywood, this Pennsylvania native tried to make a living playing basketball. He played at George Washington University and then moved to Venezuela to compete professionally. But acting called to him more strongly than the basket. So he returned to the United States to make the most of a physique that casting directors could not ignore.
His first foray into genre film came in 1979 with Prophecy. He played a mutant bear in a production that quietly passed through theaters without much notice. Still, that job taught him that his height was a unique storytelling tool in an industry that was beginning to obsess over realistic monsters.
Filming The Predator in 1987 is one of the most talked-about stories in horror production circles. Originally the role of the alien hunter was meant for Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Belgian actor wanted to showcase his martial arts skills and constantly complained about the suit design. Producers quickly realized they needed someone with a far more imposing and silent physical presence.
Hall accepted the challenge without knowing the shoot would be a hellish ordeal of heat and poor visibility. The mask design barely let him see through a few small slits. In the fight scenes with Schwarzenegger, he had to memorize dance-like steps so he wouldn't accidentally hit the leading star. His performance was so physical that director John McTiernan decided to give him a small human role as a helicopter pilot at the end of the film.
It was the only time audiences got to see his real face in that film.
That same year, he starred in Harry and the Hendersons. Here he traded horror for family comedy, playing a kind-hearted Bigfoot who ends up living with an American family. Rick Baker's makeup for this project won an Oscar, and much of the credit goes to the expressiveness Hall managed to convey despite the heavy prosthetics.
In the early nineties, his career seemed stable on television with the adaptation of Harry and the Hendersons into a weekly series. But tragedy struck in the form of a car accident in 1990. Hall suffered serious injuries and needed several blood transfusions during his hospital stay.
Months after the surgery, he discovered that the blood he had received was contaminated with HIV. The illness progressed aggressively due to his enormous body mass and the physical toll of his years on set. He died on April 10, 1991, from pneumonia caused by the infection.
He was only 35 years old when he died.
His legacy remains intact in the credits of special effects studios in Los Angeles. In 1990, he filmed Predator 2 alongside Danny Glover, shaping the movements of an alien species that has starred in more than six films to date. The original suit he wore in the first film is preserved today as a feat of engineering that no motion capture system has managed to surpass in weight and real presence.
