In 2004 Kevin Willmott shook the festival circuit with a mockumentary imagining a Confederate victory in the Civil War. The film C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America used fictional television commercials to depict a nation where slavery remained in place. Willmott was not after empty entertainment; he aimed to hold up a mirror to a country that prefers to ignore its past.
He doesn't seek easy applause.
Born in Junction City, his training was tied from the start to the fight for civil rights and social activism. For Willmott, filmmaking has always been an extension of his teaching at the University of Kansas. His approach never separates screenwriting from rigorous historical research.
For decades, he worked from the fringes of the American film industry. But his name began to resonate strongly in Los Angeles offices when his path crossed with Spike Lee's. This creative partnership was built on a shared view of structural racism and the need to use sharp humor as a tool for social criticism.
In 2015 he co-wrote the screenplay for Chi-Raq, adapting the Greek comedy Lysistrata to gang violence in Chicago. Critics did not always understand its exaggerated, musical tone. So the pair decided to take a more direct approach in their next collaboration.
The industry was never his priority.
In 2018 he achieved mass recognition with the release of BlacKkKlansman. Willmott adapted the true story of a Black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. The screenplay won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and cemented a narrative style that blends police tension with sharper social commentary.
But his success on the red carpet did not change his work habits in the Midwest. Willmott preferred to keep his base of operations in Kansas, away from the distractions of California. From there, he continued to examine war conflicts from a racial perspective that Hollywood typically left out of traditional war productions.
In 2020, Da 5 Bloods premiered on a streaming platform during the global lockdown months. The story follows four African American veterans who return to Vietnam to search for the remains of their squad leader and buried treasure. The script explores post-traumatic stress and the contradiction of fighting for a country that denied them basic rights in their own home.
That same year he directed The 24th, which depicts the Houston riots of 1917. In this film, Willmott set aside big budgets to focus on the psychological tension of soldiers in the 24th Infantry Regiment. However, the film's distribution suffered from the technical limitations of movie theaters that were closed due to the global health crisis.
But recognition took time to arrive.
In 2024, Willmott finished shooting The 10th, once again focusing on Black soldiers in American history. The production had a small crew and was shot mainly on location in Kansas. The film's final budget came to five million dollars after eighteen days of intensive filming.
