Kinjal Nanda never sought fame on movie sets. He was too busy in the hallways of a hospital in Kolkata. His training as an ENT doctor gave him a technical discipline that he later brought to acting without going through conventional drama schools.

The operating room was his first school of reality.

He juggled medical shifts with theater rehearsals before Bengali cinema came knocking at his door. This duality defines the way he works, because he understands the human body through biology and not just through emotion. In 2018, he played Hiralal Sen, the pioneer of Indian cinema, in the film Hiralal.

It was a complex shoot that demanded a physical transformation to understand a forgotten visionary. Critics noticed him not for his charisma but for his ability to disappear into the character. But mass recognition took a few more years to arrive.

From Historical Drama to Mass Success

In 2021, the film Hiralal had its commercial release after a long run on the festival circuit. Nanda proved he could carry the weight of a large-scale biographical production. And he did it while still practicing medicine during the global health crisis.

The industry stopped seeing him as an outsider.

But the definitive breakthrough came in 2022 with 8/12 Binay Badal Dinesh. In this project, he played Binay Krishna Basu, a revolutionary who fought British rule in India. The film earned notable box office figures on the regional circuit and took him out of the niche of auteur cinema and into the mainstream.

That same year, he took part in Karnasubarner Guptodhon, an adventure film that broke box office records in West Bengal. His role here was supporting but strategic. He learned to handle the rhythms of commercial cinema without losing the restraint he brought from independent theater.

And the gamble paid off.

Production and Technical Maturity

In 2023, he joined the cast of Byomkesh O Durgo Rohosyo, one of the most beloved detective franchises in the region. His portrayal of Binayak was praised as a necessary display of restraint in a genre that tends toward theatrics. Nanda chooses his projects with almost surgical coolness.

Before shooting, he reads the script looking for logical gaps in the story. He isn't interested in roles that only require a friendly face. In 2024, he premiered Shastri and Ajogyo, two films that placed him at the center of the Tollywood industry with top-tier star salaries.

His name appears in the production credits of several independent projects seeking funding in international markets. His fee in 2024 has tripled his initial fee from six years ago. The contract for his next film was signed in December 2023, with a full exclusivity clause during the shoot.
