In 2015, Keneti James Fitzgerald Apa arrived in Los Angeles with a guitar on his shoulder and a return ticket to Auckland in his pants pocket.
He didn't know the Archie comics and had no particular attachment to American pop culture. For four months, Warner Bros. casting directors searched halfway around the world for a square-jawed redhead to lead their new TV project. They ended up hiring a New Zealander of Samoan descent with coal-black hair who showed up to his audition playing classic rock songs live.
The dye took six hours to set.
That fake hair color and the weekly bleaching sessions marked the start of a television phenomenon that nobody in the American industry saw coming.
Before landing in Hollywood, the kid had already racked up plenty of experience on sets back home. Between 2013 and 2015, he played student Kane Jenkins in Shortland Street, New Zealand's longest-running daily series. That industrial-pace shoot gave him the technical discipline to memorize entire scenes in minutes and endure grueling workdays without complaint.
The premiere of Riverdale in 2017 turned the comic book characters into a shadowy teen thriller filled with murders and sculpted gym bodies. The audience responded with enthusiasm on traditional screens and on streaming platforms.
Apa signed an initial contract with standard television pay that soon climbed above 40,000 dollars per episode after the cast's popularity exploded.
It was seven seasons and one hundred and thirty-seven episodes playing a high school character while his real life moved at a different speed. And that airtight contract ended up working almost like a gilded cage, one he couldn't walk away from without paying astronomical penalties.
But not all of his choices turned out well. In 2020, he starred in Inmune, a dystopian action film produced by Michael Bay during the harshest months of the global quarantine, which collected a crushing 9% approval rating from critics and drew strong backlash for commercial opportunism.
And music appeared as an outlet.
In 2021, he independently released Clocks, a folk-sound record on which he played nearly every instrument and wrote the lyrics outside the major record labels. He wanted to recapture the feel of the strings without cameras around.
When the series finally ended in 2023, the actor sought projects with greater physical demands. In 2024 he led the sports drama One Fast Move, playing a motorcycle racer, a production in which he did without stunt doubles for most of the track shots.
Far from the bustle of the studios, Apa holds a status that has nothing to do with red-carpet fame. In 2022, he received the traditional Samoan title of matai under the name Savae, a family honor that formally made him a chief of his community and tied him to community service obligations on his father's island.
Nobody saw that plot twist coming.
His ties to his family roots mattered far more than West Coast parties. So his approach to the entertainment business changed after he became a father and completely distanced himself from the youth production companies of Los Angeles.
In 2024 he earned his first credit as an executive producer on a film, to oversee financial and casting decisions. In 2025 he starred in The Map of Us alongside Madelyn Cline, directed by Swedish filmmaker Lasse Hallström.
In 2026 he finished shooting the romantic drama Falling alongside Isabel May before joining the cast of the independent thriller Jimmy.
Production on Falling wrapped its principal photography after forty-two days of location shooting between New York and London, on a locked budget of ten million dollars.
