Kedarnath Bhattacharya arrived in Bombay in the mid-1980s with little money and an obsession that bordered on pathological. He wanted to sing like Kishore Kumar. But the industry wasn't looking for imitators; it wanted a voice that could carry the emotional weight of a new decade. He changed his name to Kumar Sanu to make it easier to market and began grinding away at second-rate recording studios.
His real break came in 1990. Composer Jagjit Singh heard him and decided his voice was right for a low-budget film titled Aashiqui. No one expected the movie to sell millions of copies. Sanu gave voice to a melancholy romanticism that connected with young people who were buying cassettes in huge numbers on street corners in Delhi and Kolkata.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1993, the singer pulled off a physical feat that still looks like a typo in statistics books. He recorded twenty-eight songs in a single day. He would walk into the booth, read the lyrics, adjust his pitch, and nail the final take in just a few minutes. It was a technical massacre that shows the lung capacity of a man who knew nothing of fatigue or second chances.
During the first half of the nineties, his voice was a constant presence in movie theaters across India. If a producer wanted to guarantee a film's profitability, he needed Sanu to record at least the main theme. He worked tirelessly with the duo Nadeem-Shravan and set to music the first major hits of Shah Rukh Khan in films such as Baazigar and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
But massive success brought with it a wearing down of the formula. Sanu recorded so much that sometimes he couldn't remember which movie he was singing for as he rushed from one studio to another in his car. His style relied on a very specific breathing technique that let him stretch out notes without any visible strain. This earned him five consecutive Filmfare Awards between 1991 and 1995.
The phone wouldn't stop ringing.
Because the public wanted nothing else. Still, the arrival of new sounds at the end of the decade began to push his classic style aside. The rise of composers like A.R. Rahman brought electronic sounds and structures that no longer fit as well with his traditional training. Sanu didn't try to force it and began choosing his projects with more distance.
In 2009, he received the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, for his contribution to the arts. It recognized a career that already included more than 20,000 songs recorded in over twenty different languages. He wasn't limited to Hindi; his presence in Bengali cinema was just as powerful for years of relentless production.
In 2023, he served as a judge on the TV show Indian Idol, evaluating the new generation of singers trying to imitate his vibrato. His role in the media has shifted from the front line of the studio to that of a veteran mentor. He still performs concerts around the world for the Indian diaspora, who still tie his songs to the years of the country's economic liberalization.
His daughter Shannon K has launched her own music career in the United States under his direct supervision. As of 2024, Sanu splits his time between Kolkata and London while managing the rights to a catalog that continues to generate millions in streaming revenue. In the last decade alone, he has recorded more than two thousand additional songs for regional productions on tight budgets.
