Kunal Sharma didn't start his career chasing red carpets. His obsession was always the sound of a slap or the crunch of sand under worn-out boots. In 1999, he finished his studies at the prestigious FTII in Pune, and that technical foundation became the bedrock of a career that shuns flashy special effects in favor of hyperrealistic sound.

The industry took a while to understand his approach.

During his early years in Mumbai, he worked on projects where sound design was a secondary process. But Sharma insisted that a scene's atmosphere matters more than the dialogue. In 2004, he took part in Paanch, and there he began building a creative relationship with directors who wanted to break the clean, artificial aesthetic of mainstream Indian cinema.

Because for this sound designer, perfection is a technical lie. He prefers the texture of the real.

Wasseypur's Gritty Realism

In 2012, the release of Gangs of Wasseypur changed how audiences perceived sound in India's art-house cinema. Sharma designed an atmosphere where the sound of bullets and chases through narrow alleys felt physical and suffocating. He won the National Film Award for that technical work, and his name shot to the forefront of international production.

He wasn't looking for the cleanliness of a studio but the grit of the street. So he spent weeks recording ambient sounds on real locations to avoid prepackaged audio libraries. The result is an immersion that the average viewer rarely notices, but that the subconscious appreciates immediately.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2015, he worked on Mukkabaaz, where the sound of punches in the ring had to convey real pain. Sharma chose to pull the microphones back to capture the echo of the gym rather than focusing only on the impact. These technical details are what separate a technician from a sound storyteller.

Expanding into Streaming and Going Quiet

The arrival of global streaming platforms in 2018 allowed him to experiment with much more complex surround sound formats. On Sacred Games, he used sound design to differentiate Mumbai's social classes through background noise. The poor neighborhoods sound saturated, while spaces of power breathe with an artificial silence.

In 2020, he worked on The Disciple under the direction of Chaitanya Tamhane. In this film, the sound of classical Indian music had to be the absolute star, and Sharma opted for a minimalist mix. It was his quietest and most demanding project to date.

But sound isn't always music.

In 2023, he handled the sound post-production for several large-scale productions for the Asian market. His team uses cutting-edge digital workstations, but he still insists on capturing direct audio on hostile locations. The final mix of his latest feature film in 2025 was completed after fourteen weeks of intensive editing in a London studio.
