Kurt Cobain spent rainy afternoons in Aberdeen shut away with a cheap cassette recorder, making noise collages and distorted audio tapes. He drew monsters in the corners of his school notebooks and hated his hometown's logging atmosphere with an almost physical ferocity. That gangly kid understood very early that anger only works if it can be projected outward with enough volume.
In the mid-1980s, the underground punk scene in Washington State was a tiny circuit of battered vans and clubs that smelled of stale beer. Cobain met bassist Krist Novoselic, and together they formed the rhythm section of what would become Nirvana. They weren't chasing fame or million-dollar contracts in Los Angeles offices, but escaping a gray routine that condemned them to work at local sawmills.
In 1989, the independent label Sub Pop released Bleach, a raw album recorded in just three days of unofficial sessions. Producer Jack Endino earned 606 dollars and 17 cents for the entire recording, a ridiculous sum for an album that sold thousands of copies by word of mouth.
And the noise started to grow.
When they signed with DGC Records in 1991, no one in the music industry anticipated the commercial impact that was coming. Cobain wanted the guitars to sound dense yet accessible, fascinated by the pop melodies of The Beatles and the sharp aggression of Pixies. Producer Butch Vig smoothed those edges at Sound City Studios in California to shape Nevermind.
Cobain tightly controlled the band's visual aesthetic. For the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit, directed by Samuel Bayer, he sketched preliminary drawings and insisted that the shoot look like a chaotic school riot rather than a polished choreography typical of commercial TV. The result blew up the sales charts.
In January 1992, the album knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart after selling more than 300,000 copies a week in U.S. stores.
But commercial success slowly poisoned him.
His chronic stomach pain, never precisely diagnosed by doctors, combined with a growing heroin addiction and the constant harassment of the tabloids after his marriage to Courtney Love. Cobain hated that audiences hostile to his political ideas sang his songs in giant stadiums without understanding a single word of the message.
To shake off its image as a commercial product, the band hired producer Steve Albini in 1993 and recorded In Utero over two weeks of technical isolation in Minnesota. They wanted a dry, hostile, deliberately rough sound that would scare off casual listeners. For the video for Heart-Shaped Box, Cobain worked with Anton Corbijn, designing a set loaded with medical imagery, crosses, and plastic fetuses that anticipated his own collapse.
In late 1993, the band recorded MTV Unplugged in New York at Sony Music's Manhattan studios. Cobain insisted on decorating the stage with white lilies, black candles, and a crystal chandelier, forcing the production crew to build an atmosphere resembling a formal wake. He played songs by David Bowie, Lead Belly, and The Vaselines with an acoustic guitar plugged into a saturated amplifier so he wouldn't lose distortion.

Things you probably didn't know about Kurt Cobain
I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had voted me Most Likely to Kill Everyone at a High School Dance.
In Aberdeen, I hated my best friends with a passion, because they were idiots.
They're claiming that [the grunge bands] finally put Seattle on the map, but, like, what map? ...I mean, we had Jimi Hendrix. Heck, what more do we want?
To be positive at all times is to ignore all that is important, sacred or valuable. To be negative at all times is to be threatened by ridiculousness and instant discredibility. [p. 18]
I need an easy friendI do, with an ear to lend.
Load up on guns, bring your friends.
