Elián Ángel Valenzuela recorded his first vocal tracks with a 1,000-peso floor mic and a school netbook from the state program Conectar Igualdad. It happened in General Rodríguez, a working-class town in western Buenos Aires province, where he was born in April 2000. His lead producer charged by the hour for mixing until he realized that the drawn-out cadence of that kid had an unusual commercial edge.
The sound was born under the cumbia 420 label. It blended the rhythmic base of traditional cumbia villera with the heavy tempo of Puerto Rican reggaeton and the distorted lows of Atlanta trap.
No one in the record industry saw it coming.
In 2020, the release of L-Gante RKT surpassed two million views within weeks without any support from major record labels. That music video showed dirt corners, unregistered motorcycles, and plastic thermoses for brewing mate. The camera didn't glamorize the misery; it filmed it as an everyday backyard.
In 2021, he recorded the BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 38 session with Bizarrap, a track that racked up more than three hundred million streams on digital platforms. His image jumped from neighborhood phones to political talk shows when Argentine authorities cited his case in public speeches about education and technology.
But Valenzuela rejected the pacts of institutional political correctness. He preferred to keep the neighborhood codes fully intact in front of television cameras.
Argentine cinema was quick to recognize the cinematic power of his physical presence. In 2022, director Lucas Vivo García Lagos offered him a supporting role in the crime film Franklin, historia de un billete. The movie brought together veteran actors such as Germán Palacios, Luis Brandoni, and Sofía Gala Castiglione in a plot about loan sharks and the underworld.
Valenzuela played a neighborhood boss in a tense scene in which he handles stacks of cash and handguns in front of a washed-up boxer. During filming, he learned the dialogue without changing a single comma from the technical script. That discipline on set caught the production team's attention.
And the leap to global streaming platforms happened without any middlemen.
In 2026, the series En el barro, a prison drama spun off from El marginal and created by Sebastián Ortega for Netflix, brought Valenzuela on in its second season to play Ciro Herrera. The shoot included highly intense dramatic sequences and intimate scenes alongside actress Carolina Kopelioff.
The production company assigned an on-set intimacy coordinator to set the rules for every physical contact and prevent unagreed touching during the night shoots. Valenzuela memorized three pages of dialogue in just ninety minutes before filming under the prison's spotlights.
In June 2023, police arrested the musician at his home in Buenos Aires Province on serious charges of coercive threats with a firearm and unlawful deprivation of liberty following a neighborhood dispute. A court ordered his immediate arrest, and he was held at the Quilmes Department of Investigations.
He spent nearly one hundred days in pretrial detention in a solitary cell with no access to cell phones or the internet. During that confinement, he handwrote the lyrics to thirteen songs in school notebooks. Those paper notes became the basis for his studio album, titled Celda 4 and released by Warner Music Latina in August 2024.
So the legal case turned into a daily media spectacle outside the courthouse in Mercedes. Prosecutors asked for seven years in actual prison, while the defense team demanded a full acquittal.
The judge's ruling dismantled the prosecution's case.
On October 28, 2024, single judge Ignacio Racca acquitted Valenzuela of kidnapping but sentenced him to three years in prison, suspended for the charge of threats. The ruling required him to establish a permanent residence, submit to regular monitoring by the parole office, and pay the court costs of the criminal case without ever setting foot in a penitentiary again.
