Daniela Barnes was not yet seven years old when Fernando Di Leo put her in front of a camera in 1972.
Her debut in La mala ordina was the first step of a German girl who would end up devoured by the machinery of Italian genre cinema. In the 1970s, Rome's film industry was looking for faces that blended innocence with an unsettling maturity. Lara Wendel was the stage name she chose to navigate a sea of productions that would be impossible to make today.
The Italian industry didn't ask questions.
In 1977, the title that defined her public image forever arrived. The release of Maladolescenza sparked outrage at censorship offices across half the world for its raw portrayal of teen sexuality. The film was banned in several countries, but that only meant her face appeared on European magazine covers over and over.
And despite the noise, the phone never stopped ringing at her home in Munich. But she wanted to prove there was more behind that icy stare directors kept exploiting nonstop. So she agreed to work on Desideria: La vita interiore in 1980 under the direction of Gianni Barcelloni. It was an attempt to raise the tone of her projects toward more intellectual cinema.
Her professional turning point came in 1982. That was the year Michelangelo Antonioni chose her for Identificazione di una donna.
Working with a master of European cinema gave her a veneer of respectability that horror films denied her. Although that same year she also took part in Tenebre by Dario Argento. That on-screen death is still remembered by giallo fans as one of the most technically accomplished moments in the director's career.
And then the pace began to slow down.
In the mid-1980s, the actress turned to Italian television and lower-profile co-productions. She appeared in the series La piovra in 1985 and shortly after in I ragazzi del muretto. But interest from major studios had faded (or perhaps she had grown tired of constant exposure).
In 1991, she shot her last film for the big screen, titled La villa delle anime maledette. After that project, she decided to step away from the spotlight to focus on production work behind the cameras. Her name disappeared from major cast lists for good in 1993, after a small role on television.
The transition was quiet and effective.
Her last credited appearance on a production crew dates to 2005 on a low-budget project. She has lived in Italy, far from promotional events and nostalgic interviews. Since then, she has kept an absolutely private profile with no ties to the European film industry.
