Laura Surrich

Laura Surrich didn't need a leading role to make her mark on fantasy cinema. Her big-screen debut came in 2001 under the direction of Peter Jackson. She was part of the special extras team on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, playing a dark elf. That experience at the Wellington studios shaped her career going forward, with major international productions shot on New Zealand soil.

The local industry was then buzzing with technicians and specialists.

In 2005, she worked with Jackson again on the shoot of King Kong. This time her work focused on body double and stunt roles. Her look also suited genre television, which was beginning to be exported from New Zealand around the world. So she moved to the small screen with characters that demanded constant physical preparation.

Television and Fantasy Genre

The year 2009 marked a change of direction with her casting in Legend of the Seeker. She played Constance in a production that made use of her country's natural landscapes to recreate medieval worlds. She appeared in key episodes of the first season, which helped her gain visibility beyond the circuit of film stunt performers. And she did it without giving up her performing arts training in Auckland.

Her physique set the pace of her schedule.

Because in 2010 she joined the cast of Spartacus: Blood and Sand. In this Starz series, she played one of the enslaved women in a production environment that was extremely demanding on a technical level. Scenes were shot almost entirely in front of green screens and required millimeter-precise movements. The actress had to adapt to a production system where digital post-production mattered more than the real set.

But her career was not limited to robes and swords.

In 2009 she also explored horror with the movie Diagnosis: Death. It was a low-budget production in which she shared the cast with New Zealand comedy figures such as Raybon Kan. The shoot lasted only a few weeks, and it was a complete departure from the massive logistics of Hollywood blockbusters. It was an exercise in gritty realism compared with the stylized fantasy of her earlier work.

The actress kept her residence in New Zealand, combining work in front of the cameras with movement technique instruction. In 2012, her professional activity turned toward training new talent in the Oceanic film industry. The confidentiality agreement for her last appearance as a stunt performer in 2014 kept production design details from leaking before the premiere.
