Lauren Tewes landed the role of Julie McCoy after beating out more than a hundred actresses in a marathon audition in 1977. Aaron Spelling needed someone who could project an almost unreal kindness while catering to the passengers of the Pacific Princess. And she had that clean-cut look producers wanted to sell vacations at sea to middle-class Americans.
The contract was signed in less than twenty-four hours.
For seven seasons, she was the friendly face of The Love Boat. Her job was to smile and mix cocktails while guest stars sorted out their romantic troubles on deck. But behind the cameras, the pressure of the shooting schedule and sudden fame began to take a toll in the form of cocaine addiction. She spent much of her salary on drugs to get through workdays that sometimes stretched past fifteen hours a day.
In 1984, the show's production decided to let her go. Delays and erratic behavior on set wore out the patience of ABC executives. So they replaced her with Pat Klous, and audiences quickly got used to the new face at the front desk. It was a hard blow that kept her off Hollywood's main circuit for years.
She tried to rebuild her life away from the spotlight of the major networks. In 1987, she suffered the loss of her premature baby, who died just days after being born. This event kept her from making any immediate attempt to return to the front lines of television. Because the industry rarely waits for those who need time to heal.
And the industry doesn't forgive silence.
She retreated to regional theater and low-budget supporting roles. In the late nineties, she made occasional appearances in some The Love Boat specials to close out her character's arc. But the phone no longer rang as often as it used to. So she decided to diversify her training and enrolled in a professional culinary school in Seattle.
Her voice became her main professional tool starting in the 2000s. She took part in the voice work for big-budget video games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in 2011, where she voiced several characters. It is invisible but steady work that allowed her to maintain financial stability far from the tyranny of physical image.
In 2022, she took part in several events organized by the cruise line Princess Cruises. The company named her godmother of one of its new ships, alongside the rest of the original series cast. It was an exercise in nostalgia for an audience that still associated her with the most famous cruise director in 1980s television.
She kept her residence in the Seattle area for decades. There, she balances her work as a voice actress with collaborations in small-scale local theater productions. In 2024, her professional activity centers on the classic TV fan convention circuit, where she charges for autographs and photos for fans who still remember her white uniform.
Her salary in the show's first season was 1,500 dollars per episode.
