The British pop industry learned to churn out idols on an assembly line inside television studios, but it almost never knew what to do with the spare parts. Liam Payne entered that machine at just fourteen years old, singing jazz in front of Simon Cowell in 2008, though it was in 2010 that the judges decided to pair him with four other rejected boys to create One Direction.
That manufactured alliance soon went on to fill stadiums and break sales records around the world.
Payne took on the role of the sensible member, the reliable vocalist who opened the songs and carried the most difficult choruses. Between 2011 and 2015, the group sold more than seventy million records and lived tied to a grueling schedule of international tours and nonstop promotional shoots.
In 2013, director Morgan Spurlock brought his 3D cameras into the band's dressing rooms to shoot the documentary This Is Us. The film grossed more than sixty-eight million dollars worldwide and exposed the claustrophobic routine of five young men locked in hotel rooms to escape the crowds waiting outside.
And the formula broke box office records.
But behind the sold-out shows and the multimillion-dollar merchandise, the pressure began to take its toll in the form of severe isolation and alcohol problems, which the singer himself later admitted.
At the end of 2015, the group announced an indefinite hiatus that sounded more like a final goodbye. Payne sought his own place on the urban charts and signed with major international labels to distance himself from the teen pop that had made him famous.
In May 2017, he released the single Strip That Down with rapper Quavo, a song co-written with Ed Sheeran that racked up hundreds of millions of streams on digital platforms and put his name on the U.S. market without the group's backing. The following year, he recorded For You as a duet with Rita Ora, the main song from the film Fifty Shades Freed, released in theaters in 2018.
Nobody prepared him for the silence.
The leap to a full-length album, however, ran into a merciless reception. In December 2019, he released his first studio album, LP1, a generic commercial pop record that British critics tore apart without mercy and that barely reached No. 17 on the charts in his home country. The commercial blow cooled his label's plans and slowed his music production in the years that followed.
Payne tried to revive his public profile on television by serving as a mentor on the talent show Building the Band for Netflix, filmed at studios in Manchester in mid-2024. That same year, in March, he released the track Teardrops, intended as the preview of a second album that never reached stores.
On October 16, 2024, he fell from the balcony of a third-floor room at the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, from a height of roughly fourteen meters off the ground. He was thirty-one years old.
The Argentine prosecutor's autopsy report determined that the cause of death was multiple trauma with internal and external bleeding, caused by a fall with no attempt at self-defense, and that multiple toxic substances had been consumed beforehand.
