Montero Lamar Hill bought a beat for thirty dollars on a digital platform while sleeping on the floor of his sister's house. In 2018, nobody in Atlanta was betting on a kid obsessed with Twitter who wanted to mix sampled guitars from Nine Inch Nails with trap beats.

The release of Old Town Road at the end of 2018 seemed like a joke designed to rack up clicks on message boards. But when Billboard pulled the track from its country music charts, arguing that it lacked traditional elements of the genre, the story stopped being a meme.

Thirty Dollars and a Billboard Ban

Lil Nas X understood how attention worked online before anyone else. He called veteran Billy Ray Cyrus to record an extra verse, and the remix smashed commercial records by spending nineteen consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Nobody saw such an assault on mainstream radio coming.

He took advantage of the end of Pride Month in 2019 to come out publicly through a social media post that dissected the cover of his EP 7. It was a calculated move in a music industry where executives still avoided queer artists in top-tier, high-audience slots.

Festival Directors and Blood-Stained Sneakers

He avoided being pigeonholed as a one-hit creator once he decided his visual work should function as large-scale short films. In 2021, he signed Ukrainian director Tanu Muino to film the music video for Montero (Call Me by Your Name).

The sequence in which he descends into hell on an erotic dance pole to break Satan's neck sparked censorship demands from conservative TV networks. To support the campaign, he sold six hundred and sixty-six pairs of sneakers modified with a drop of human blood in the air cushion, a guerrilla marketing stunt that led to a federal lawsuit from the original sportswear brand.

And the move paid off at the digital box office, because the visuals held their own against any science fiction release. Shortly after, he hired director Christian Breslauer to shoot Industry Baby, turning a fictional penitentiary into a prison musical with dozens of dancers. His debut album, Montero, came out in September 2021 and earned five Grammy nominations.

The Toronto Stage and the Halt of 2024

His leap to the big screen came from nonfiction.

In September 2023, he premiered the documentary feature Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero at the Toronto International Film Festival, co-directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel. The opening screening was delayed by twenty minutes due to a bomb threat near the Roy Thomson Hall, but HBO acquired the rights to air it on television in January 2024.

The film captured his first international tour without the usual public relations filters, showing the panic attacks and physical exhaustion he endured in the dressing rooms.

But the entertainment industry doesn't forgive missteps. In January 2024, he directed the video for his single J Christ, using parodies of the crucifixion and Noah's ark.

Provocation stopped being a foolproof formula.

The song fell to number sixty-nine on the Hot 100 in just seven days. In November 2024, he released Light Again!, produced by Thomas Bangalter, closing out that chapter with an international tour that raked in more than forty million dollars in ticket sales.
