Lionel Messi's first contract was signed on a paper napkin during a lunch at the Pompeia Tennis Club in Barcelona. It was December 2000. Carles Rexach, technical secretary of F.C. Barcelona, scribbled four hurried lines to keep a 13-year-old kid who had spent weeks waiting for a formal offer at a hotel on Plaza España.
Nobody expected much from a kid who barely stood four feet, eleven inches tall.
In Rosario, his original club, Newell's Old Boys, refused to pay for the daily growth hormone injections that cost nine hundred dollars a month. Lionel's father worked as a foreman in a steel factory, and the family budget couldn't stretch to cover such a long endocrine treatment.
So the family packed up their lives and flew to Catalonia with the promise that the Blaugrana club would pay for the medication. The adjustment was rough. His mother and siblings returned to Argentina a few months later because they couldn't handle the distance, but Lionel decided to stay with his father in a modest apartment near Camp Nou.
Frank Rijkaard gave him his official debut in October 2004 against Espanyol. But the real change of scale came when Pep Guardiola took over the Camp Nou bench in the summer of 2008. Guardiola set aside the established stars in the dressing room to build the attack around a small false nine who read defensive lines the way a film editor reads the cuts of a sequence.
Between 2008 and 2012, the Argentine striker smashed every statistical record in La Liga. In 2012 he closed the calendar year with 91 goals in 69 official matches, a figure that surpassed the record German Gerd Müller had held unbeaten since 1972.
In 2014, filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia released the documentary Messi, a feature shot in a Madrid restaurant where former teammates, coaches and journalists analyzed his guardedness in front of the cameras. Because off the pitch, the forward from Rosario barely spoke. He dodged press conferences, answered in monosyllables and preferred that others handle the media noise.
The contrast between his public shyness and his ferocity with the ball baffled the industry.
While in Barcelona he won four Champions Leagues and ten league titles, his relationship with the Argentine national team built up ten years of extreme tension. His country's fans demanded the theatrics and showmanship of Diego Armando Maradona. He responded by staring at the ground during the national anthem.
The back-to-back defeats in the 2014 World Cup finals against Germany and in the 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals against Chile sparked a media storm in Buenos Aires. In June 2016, after missing a penalty in the final against Chile at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, he announced his retirement from the national team in the stadium's mixed zone.
The retirement lasted barely a month and a half.
He came back at popular demand and in July 2021 lifted the Copa América at the Maracanã Stadium after beating Brazil in the final. That triumph ended a 28-year drought without official titles for his country's senior national team. A year and a half later, in December 2022, he led Argentina to the World Cup title in Qatar after defeating France in the penalty shootout of the final at Lusail.
In August 2021, Spanish league financial fair play restrictions prevented the renewal of his contract with F.C. Barcelona. The forward then signed with Paris Saint-Germain on a two-season deal, a period marked by the cold reception from the stands at the Parc des Princes and a lack of sporting fit.
In July 2023, the player made the leap to Major League Soccer in the United States to join Inter Miami. That deal included a share of global subscription revenue from the streaming service run by Apple TV, a corporate move that turned his status from athlete into a television distribution partner.
The apple streaming platform premiered the documentary series Messi Goes to America in 2023, and in 2024 the four-episode project Messi's World Cup: The Rise of a Legend, produced by Smuggler Entertainment. Both titles served as a testing ground for his next financial move.
In September 2024, Messi founded his own production company, 525 Rosario, in direct partnership with the American company Smuggler Entertainment. The company launched with operating offices in Miami and Los Angeles, focused on developing family feature films, nonfiction formats and commercial filming technology. The first slate of projects set a three-year development plan, with no appearances by the footballer on camera.

Things you probably didn't know about Lionel Messi
Diego is Diego and for me he is the greatest player of all time. Even after a million years I am not even going to be close to Maradona. I have no intention of comparing myself with Maradona - I want to make my own history for something I have achieved.
It doesn't matter if I am better than Cristiano Ronaldo, all that matters is that Barcelona are better than Madrid.
Ronaldo (Brazilian footballer) was my hero. He was the best forward I've ever seen. He was so fast that he could score a goal from nothing and he struck the ball better than anyone I've seen.
Being a dad changes everything for the better and I’m really enjoying it.
Barcelona gave me everything, they took a chance on me when nobody else would. I never have any desire to play for anybody else, I will be here for as long as they want me.
[Becoming a father] has changed everything. He [Thiago] comes first then everything else. It has also changed the way I see a match. Before if I lost or did something wrong I didn't talk to anyone for three or four days, until it passed. Now, I come home after a game, I see my son and everything is alright.
