Lou Goossens understands cinema from the budget and the mud of the set. He is no polished office producer. His name is tied to the explosion of Flemish cinema that shook European festivals more than a decade ago.
In 2009, the film The Misfortunates put Belgium on the map for international critics. Goossens was there, managing the chaos of a raw, boozy story. That project under the Menuet label was more than a local box office hit. It confirmed that author-driven cinema could be made with impeccable technical craftsmanship.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2012, he repeated the winning formula with The Broken Circle Breakdown. The film earned an Oscar nomination in 2014 and put the Belgian film industry in a privileged position. But Goossens did not stay stuck in author-driven drama and went looking for stories with more commercial muscle.
Because in European cinema, financing is a puzzle that few people can solve without losing their minds. His method is built on surgical selection of scripts. He doesn't produce by volume because he prefers to control every phase of the financial process.
In 2015, he took part in the production of The Ardennes. It's a tight thriller that earned millions in international markets thanks to aggressive distribution. The film showed that noir made in Antwerp had a universal language.
Money well spent shows on screen.
So the move to high-end television was a logical decision in response to the shift in global viewing habits. In 2019, he got into the world of series with Undercover. The production was distributed through global streaming platforms and went head-to-head with the big American studios.
But success on the small screen didn't make him abandon the technical rigor of his early days. During 2022 and 2023, Goossens stayed active in internationally ambitious projects such as Rough Diamonds. On this production, the level of detail in recreating Antwerp's diamond district was obsessive.
The budget he managed exceeded the initial expectations to ensure a realism that would jump off the screen. The logistics included special permits to shoot in high-security areas of the Belgian city.
There is no room for error on ten-week shoots.
Goossens's career avoids the spotlight and hides behind financial reports. In 2024, his schedule remains focused on European co-productions that aim to balance economic return with critical prestige. The shoot of his latest major series in Antwerp involved a technical crew of more than eighty people.
