Madison Beer uploaded a cover of Etta James to YouTube in May 2012. She was thirteen years old, with a voice that didn't match her age. Justin Bieber shared the link with his followers, and the industry machine kicked into high gear. She signed with Island Records under the guidance of Scooter Braun in an environment that demanded immediate results.
But the record label executives didn't understand a teenager who wanted total control over her sound. They forced her to record songs she hated and an aesthetic that felt foreign to her. The creative clash ended in a professional split that kept her off commercial radio for a long time.
She tore up her contract to save herself.
She decided to manage her career without major labels behind her to avoid the pressures of the past. In 2018, she released the EP As She Pleases and attracted an audience without the backing of major corporations. The single Dead gained millions of streams organically thanks to her constant presence on social media.
And then came the world of video games.
In 2018, she voiced Evelynn in the virtual group K/DA for the game League of Legends. The song Pop/Stars became a global phenomenon on digital platforms and opened an unexpected source of income. It was a smart move that took her away from conventional pop and brought her to a massive audience beyond traditional radio formats.
The industry had turned her down for not being easily molded. But her online community grew steadily and solidly. In 2019, she signed with Epic Records on her own artistic terms to guarantee her independence in the studio.
She released her debut studio album Life Support in 2021. On the record, she spoke openly about her borderline personality disorder diagnosis and the panic attacks she suffered during tours. The production aimed for dense textures reminiscent of modern psychedelic work, moving her music away from teen pop.
In 2023, she released her memoir titled The Half of It. The book details the harassment she suffered online and how early fame affected her mental health for nearly a decade. That same year, she recorded Silence Between Songs, inspired by the sixties sound aesthetic and melodic folk.
So her public image shifted from viral star to meticulous songwriter. Recording her second album took nearly two years due to her obsession with vocal harmonies and string arrangements. Madison Beer controls every frequency of her tracks in the recording studio to prevent outside interference.
The The Spinnin Tour traveled across Europe and North America in 2024. The production budget for the stage design exceeded two million dollars.
