Maria Sten

Maria Sten was born in Copenhagen in 1989. Long before Hollywood learned how to spell her last name, she was already dominating the stage as a professional dancer for international artists. That chapter in Denmark ended when she decided that modeling and dance were not enough to fulfill her creative ambitions.

She moved to the United States without a clear safety net.

In 2011, she represented her country at Miss Universe. It was a necessary step toward gaining visibility, but her real obsession lay in editing rooms and blank pages. Sten didn't want to be just a pretty face in a perfume ad.

The Script Before the Spotlight

She started writing her own stories because the roles offered to her lacked substance. In 2016, she wrote, directed and produced the short film Wildcat. It was her way of showing that she controlled the story and that her career would not depend on other people's calls.

Her name began to be heard in producers' offices in 2017. Her script When It Burns made it onto the prestigious Black List, which highlights the best unproduced screenplays of the year. That opened the doors of writers' rooms to her before those of major film sets.

She worked as a writer on the ABC series Big Sky. This technical side gives her a competitive edge when she steps in front of the camera. She knows why a line is there and what role it plays in the dramatic structure of the scene.

And the gamble paid off.

Building an Iron Secondary School

The general public first recognized her in 2018 thanks to Channel Zero: The Dream Door. Playing Sasha Lynch allowed her to explore both physical and psychological horror. But the project that changed her career was the television adaptation of Lee Child's novels.

In 2022, she first stepped into the role of Frances Neagley in Reacher. Her character is a private investigator with a fear of physical contact and deadly aim. The dry chemistry she shares with the series' lead is the engine behind many of the action episodes.

Neagley is not a romantic interest.

That script decision was key to the character's success with the book's original readers. Sten plays a woman who is the only one who matches Jack Reacher intellectually and physically. In 2023, she filmed the second season and cemented her presence as the one constant link between the different storylines.

A Future With Its Own Name

During the filming of the third season of Reacher in 2024, what many analysts had expected was confirmed. Amazon Prime Video gave the green light to a spin-off series focused exclusively on her character. The project stems from the need to expand a universe that already has millions of viewing hours worldwide.

Sten will be actively involved in developing this new project. Her contract includes clauses ensuring her involvement in the creative vision of the story. She is not just the lead actress; she is a key piece in the franchise's production machinery.

The audience numbers don't lie.

Filming for the series about Neagley is scheduled to begin in 2025. In the meantime, she maintains her residence in Los Angeles and continues developing projects under her own production company. The industry no longer sees her as the Danish model who tried her luck in acting, but as a creator calling the shots.

The estimated budget for the first season of her solo series exceeds $60 million.
