In 1973, Marie Osmond recorded Paper Roses and hit number one on the country charts at just 13 years old. It was a strategic decision by her manager to set her apart from her brothers' pop sound. The industry didn't expect a teenager from Utah to compete with the adult voices of Nashville.
Her family was already a money-making machine on American television. But she preferred to walk alone in recording studios before joining the joint show. She sold more than one million copies of that first single and earned a gold record in just a few months.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1976, ABC premiered Donny & Marie. The variety show ran for three years and was built on the pure chemistry between her and her brother Donny. They filmed sketches and musical numbers during fifteen-hour days. Marie brought a dry, ironic counterpoint to her brother's high energy.
Television changed everything.
That media exposure allowed her to break into movies in 1978 with Goin' Coconuts. It was a critical failure but a box-office success with her loyal fans. Producers realized her image sold tickets regardless of the quality of the script. But she was looking for projects with more dramatic weight.
In 1980, she turned down the role of Sandy in Grease because the script didn't align with her personal values. Olivia Newton-John took the part, and Marie stayed focused on her music career. During that decade she reclaimed her place in country with albums such as There's No Stopping Your Heart in 1985.
In the mid-90s, Marie Osmond turned to musical theater. She played Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music on a national tour that crossed the United States. In 1996, she made her Broadway debut in The King and I, playing Anna Leonowens.
New York critics were harsh on her at first. But her ability to fill theaters eight times a week convinced the show's investors. The production generated profits higher than expected thanks to her name on the marquee.
In 2008, she signed a residency contract in Las Vegas with her brother. What was supposed to be a six-week run at the Flamingo Hotel ended up lasting eleven years. The show officially closed in 2019 after 1,600 performances. It was one of the most lucrative contracts in the city that decade.
The money never stopped coming in.
In 2019, she joined CBS's The Talk as a co-host. Her contract lasted only one season, and she left the show in 2020 to devote more time to other personal projects. She preferred to focus on producing made-for-TV Christmas movies.
In 2021, she starred in A Fiancé for Christmas and served as executive producer on the project. Marie Osmond has controlled her image rights and has run her own porcelain doll line for decades. She has designed more than 800 different dolls that are sold on home shopping channels.
In July 2024, she took part in the PBS special A Capitol Fourth to celebrate Independence Day. She still maintains a strict vocal discipline that allows her to sing opera and country in the same concert. Her tours are scheduled two years in advance to ensure the technical logistics.
The latest audit of her companies in 2023 valued her net worth at over 20 million dollars.
