Mariel Hemingway was born in 1961 under a surname that weighed more than her own shadow. Her grandfather Ernest had taken his own life months before she came into the world in California. She grew up in Ketchum, Idaho, among mountains and a family silence that hid too many cracks.
In 1976 she made her film debut in Lipstick. She was fourteen and shared the screen with her sister Margaux. Critics tore the movie apart but praised Mariel's natural presence in front of the camera.
And the industry took notice.
Woody Allen called her in 1979 to shoot Manhattan. That role as Tracy earned her an Oscar nomination at just 18 years old. The image of the young woman sitting in front of the Queensboro Bridge in black and white defined her public image for decades. But the early success hid a pressure that almost no one in Hollywood recognized at the time.
In 1983 she agreed to star in Star 80 under the direction of Bob Fosse. She played model Dorothy Stratten and made a decision that shaped her relationship with her own body. She underwent breast augmentation surgery to fit the beauty standard demanded by the role of the murdered playmate.
That procedure was a mistake she herself acknowledged years later. The cinema of the eighties was not kind to her career. She appeared in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace in 1987 and in Delirios de amor in 1991. But the major leading roles began to dry up while she tried to manage the mental health of those close to her.
Her sister Margaux died of an overdose in 1996.
Mariel decided that her survival depended on stepping away from the noise of the red carpet. She began writing books on wellness and yoga long before the field became saturated with gurus. Her approach was practical. She needed to clear the trail of alcoholism and depression that had followed the Hemingways for generations.
In 2013, she produced the documentary Running from Crazy. It was a brutally candid look at the seven suicides that occurred in her family. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and helped the actress reclaim control of her own public story. She was no longer just the grandchild of a literary giant or the young woman from Manhattan.
Yet the movies never fully disappeared from her schedule. In 2021 she worked on the film Grace and Grit, playing Chris. Two years later, in 2023, she shot On Sacred Ground under the direction of Josh Tickell and Rebecca Harrell Tickell. Her work in this film about the Standing Rock pipeline shows an actress who prioritizes projects with a political or social message.
And she still chooses her appearances very sparingly.
She currently lives away from the major studios and devotes much of her time to the Mariel Hemingway Foundation. In 2024, her fortune was estimated at around $14 million thanks to her real estate investments and royalties. The film On Sacred Ground had an estimated budget of $5 million during its location shoot.
