Martin Henderson landed in Sydney at just over twenty years old, with the feeling that New Zealand had become too small for him. He had spent five years playing Stuart Neilson on the soap opera Shortland Street. That financial security wasn't enough for him.
He left without looking back.
In 1996, he worked alongside a young Heath Ledger on the series Sweat. The chemistry between them was obvious, but Henderson was already looking toward Los Angeles. He knew his classic leading-man look could be a double-edged sword in the American industry.
Japanese horror adapted by Gore Verbinski gave him his first major global opportunity. In 2002 he starred in The Ring. The film grossed more than $249 million worldwide, and his face appeared on marquees all over New York.
And the gamble paid off.
But the road to action-movie stardom was not a straight line. After the commercial failure of Torque in 2004, he decided to rethink his choices. For years he alternated supporting roles in mid-budget films with strategic returns to television.
Shonda Rhimes called him in 2015 to fill the gap left by Patrick Dempsey on Grey's Anatomy. He played Nathan Riggs for two intense seasons. His contract ended in 2017 because the actor preferred to explore other formats that were less suffocating than the grueling schedule of 22 episodes a year.
Free-to-air television demands an exhausting physical toll.
Henderson never hid the fact that the sudden fame of medical dramas made him uncomfortable. He looked for projects where the landscape carried as much weight as the dialogue. So he chose to prioritize shoots in natural settings far from the Burbank studios.
His big breakthrough came back in 2019 with We Bought a Zoo. This Netflix production was filmed in the natural landscapes of Squamish and Snug Cove. Henderson took on the role of Jack Sheridan looking for a pace of life that would let him surf between shoots.
In 2022, he appeared in X, Ti West's horror film. It was a necessary change of pace that helped him move away from the clean-cut image of romantic dramas. Filming took place on a farm in Whanganui under strict silence protocols to keep the plot twists secret.
Despite his media profile, Henderson keeps a careful distance from the celebrity press. He would rather talk about navigation techniques or raising dogs than his private life. That discretion has helped him survive several decades in the spotlight without tarnishing his image.
For the sixth season of We Bought a Zoo, filmed in 2024, the production had to deal with wildfires in the Vancouver area. Henderson keeps a permanent residence on an island in New Zealand. He travels to Canada only when the filming schedule strictly requires it. The actor reportedly earns more than 200,000 dollars per episode, according to estimates from contracts signed during that period.
