At nine months old, Mary-Kate Olsen made her first appearance on the set of Passport to Paris in 1987. It wasn't her choice. The industry needed twins to comply with California's child labor laws, and she and her sister Ashley fit the bill perfectly.
Playing Michelle Tanner for eight seasons gave them a level of visibility few adults ever achieve in a lifetime. But the real business wasn't in ABC's scripts.
In 1993, they founded Dualstar Entertainment Group.
Mary-Kate went from being a little girl who said funny lines to co-chairing a multibillion-dollar company before turning ten. Products featuring her face flooded supermarkets around the world. So the money began flowing through channels that had nothing to do with pure acting.
The transition into adolescence is often the graveyard of child prodigies in Hollywood. In 2004, they tried to make the definitive leap into adult commercial films with the movie New York Minute. Critics were merciless toward the production.
The film barely grossed $21 million against a budget of over $30 million. It was the wake-up call Mary-Kate needed to realize her place was no longer in front of a movie camera.
And the industry took notice.
After that box office flop, her screen appearances became rare. She appeared in eight episodes of the series Weeds in 2007, playing a devout and somewhat eccentric girl. It was an attempt to move away from the perfect-child image the market had imposed on her for decades.
Her most recent notable role came in 2011 with the film Beastly. After that shoot, she stepped away from acting entirely.
2006 marks the year The Row was born. Mary-Kate was looking for the perfect white T-shirt. She wanted no logos and no aggressive advertising. She just wanted impeccable patterns and extremely high-quality fabrics that could justify four-figure price tags.
Many assumed it would just be another boring celebrity brand.
They were wrong.
The company entered the quiet luxury market years before the term became a trend in fashion magazines. They won their first CFDA award for Womenswear Designers of the Year in 2012. They repeated the honor in 2015, 2018 and 2019.
Mary-Kate runs an empire that brings in hundreds of millions of dollars a year while keeping an almost obsessive low profile. She avoids social media and doesn't give personal interviews. Because her value lies precisely in that absence of media noise.
In 2021, she finalized her divorce from Olivier Sarkozy after a legal battle that made headlines in the business press over control of their properties in New York. The Row continues to operate with a catalog that includes leather handbags priced at €5,000.
