Meg Foster has eyes that look like blown glass. That isn't a aesthetic compliment but a technical description of her most powerful work tool. In 1970 she debuted on the series Here Come the Brides, and from that moment the industry knew her gaze would shape every role she took.
Chris Cagney was her big missed opportunity. In 1982 she shot the first season of Cagney & Lacey, but CBS executives abruptly decided to fire her. The official reason was that she came across as too aggressive, and her chemistry with Tyne Daly was considered too intense for audiences of the time.
It was a hard blow.
Foster was replaced by Sharon Gless to soften the series' tone. But she didn't stop and sought refuge in genre films, where her look fit without needing explanations. In 1983 she worked under Sam Peckinpah in The Osterman Weekend and proved she could hold her own in close-ups opposite legends like Rutger Hauer.
John Carpenter understood better than anyone how to film it. In 1988 she played Holly Thompson in They Live, where her coolness fit the film's tone. Before shooting her scenes, she barely spoke with Roddy Piper so she could keep the necessary distance.
Evil-Lyn's makeup in 1987 was a constant physical ordeal. During the shoot of Masters of the Universe, she had to endure hours of prosthetic application that emphasized the blue of her irises. The film flopped at the box office, but she saved the day with a chilly performance that fans still remember at conventions.
And the gamble paid off.
Her name became directly linked to horror and quality B movies during the nineties. She appeared in Stepfather II in 1989 and in Shrunken Heads in 1994. She never cared about the project's budget as long as the character had an edge to explore on screen.
Rob Zombie brought her back for a new generation of viewers. In 2012 she played Margaret Morgan in The Lords of Salem, and four years later she worked with the director again in 31. Zombie wanted the same gaze she had seen as a child on drive-in screens across the United States.
Foster keeps working without making media noise or chasing critics' applause. In 2018 she joined the Cenobite saga with Hellraiser: Judgment, playing The Oracle. She doesn't need big monologues because her physical presence fills the gaps in the script.
So she accepted the role without reading the full script.
In 2024 she took part in the shoot of The Lodger under the direction of Nicolaas Schmidt. The production was carried out on locations in Mississippi with a small crew and a budget of less than two million dollars.
