Mercedes Milá never asked permission to look into his interviewees' eyes as if demanding a criminal confession. In a media landscape used to the bureaucratic courtesy of the Transition, she created a style of television where physical distance simply did not exist. She leaned in, tilted her head, and let uncomfortable silences linger until the guest made the mistake of filling them. And the trick almost always worked.

Her paternal surname carried a Catalan noble title, but she chose the rough terrain of trench journalism. She worked on the sports pages of Don Balón and in morning radio before the offices at Prado del Rey gave her free rein in 1978 alongside Isabel Tenaille on Dos por dos. That was only the prelude to an invasive style.

The Interrogation as an Authorial Genre

In 1982, public television premiered Buenas noches, and the studio turned into a boxing ring. It was directed by José Sámano, her partner at the time, who used tight shots that exposed every nervous tic of the guests. Francisco Umbral complained about his book, and Camilo José Cela demonstrated incredible physical skills to a host who didn't even blink.

Nobody walked away unscathed from that table.

Then came De jueves a jueves in 1986 and El martes que viene in 1990. In all of them, the same rule applied: make the guest uncomfortable so viewers wouldn't switch off the TV. When private networks broke the monopoly in Spain, Antena 3 put a big check on the table to sign her in 1992 for Queremos saber. She helped socio-political debate reach peaks of 35% audience share at a time when ratings were measured in absolute millions.

But the classic studio format eventually exhausted its own limits. So Milá went looking in the mud, where few professionals of her standing dared to look.

The Guadalix Bunker and the Wear of Live Television

In April 2000, Telecinco bought a Dutch franchise that the critics of the day dismissed as trash TV before seeing the first episode. Milá took over hosting Big Brother, wearing outlandish outfits and defending the format as a social observation experiment. Purists in the profession spoke of desertion.

She couldn't have cared less.

She hosted the quiz show for fifteen seasons over sixteen years, with ratings that in its first final topped nine million viewers and a 70% share. In that studio, she scolded contestants harshly, showed her underwear without warning the director, and handled clashes with the tone of a duty judge. Because Milá wasn't playing a character: she was herself, spilling over the script. Alongside that circus, she ran Diario de… starting in 2004, where she used hidden cameras to expose health scams and underground networks.

Such overexposure eventually took a physical toll. In 2016, severe depression combined with financial disputes with Paolo Vasile's top management forced her permanent departure from the Guadalix house.

Old Age Before the Television Mirror

Far from the commercial spotlight, the journalist chose slow-paced formats. In 2019, she premiered Scott y Milá on Movistar Plus+, a show of walks and confessions in which her dog was the only constant companion. Two years later, in 2021, production company Zanskar created Milá vs. Milá for her, in which she revisited old footage from the 1980s face to face with veteran guests such as Serrat, Iñaki Gabilondo, or Massiel.

Her return to public television took more than three decades. At the end of 2023, she premiered No sé de qué me hablas on La 1, co-hosted by Inés Hernand, with the idea of confronting RTVE's documentary archive with the opinions of a young studio audience. The show premiered on November 30, 2023, with 1,153,000 viewers and a 8.4% share in prime time, ending its run of eight episodes without a season renewal.

Trivia about Mercedes Milá

Things you probably didn't know about Mercedes Milá

During her first years as an intern, she was in charge of the teleprinter and dropped a sheet announcing a "gas explosion in Madrid"; in reality, it reported the assassination of Carrero Blanco, and she nearly got fired.
Although she became one of the faces of Gran Hermano, she did not host the show's third season; she did, however, host the other seasons during its first years.
She claims she wanted to go into politics and that journalism came into her life by chance.
In an interview, she said the police have banned her from taking photos with other people, a restriction she presented as a security measure related to her popularity.
For four years she was out of work because, she was told, she was considered too difficult to deal with. During that period, her partner, José Sámano, paid for groceries and the apartment.
She has explained that she depends heavily on her dog and that living with him helps her through her bouts of depression.
In an interview, she recalled that, to prepare for a conversation with Rocío Jurado, she went to eat at his home; Jurado cooked rice with habichuelas and afterward gave her a silver coffee set as a gift.
She has confessed to a peculiar superstition on TV: if she spots someone in the studio wearing something yellow, she heads straight for that person.
To keep her mouth from drying out during interviews, she has said she places a little salt under her tongue to generate saliva.
She refused to be paid directly for some public appearances and asked that the corresponding 10,000 euros be donated to the NGO Open Arms.
