Motomu Kiyokawa never sought the spotlight of cover stars. He understood that the voice is a muscle trained on the theater stage before stepping into the recording studios of Tokyo. In 1957 he joined the prestigious Haiyuza company, where he learned that silence can communicate as much as the most heart-wrenching scream.
That restraint was his greatest tool for decades.
His move into animation dubbing was no accident or easy way out. In 1979 he voiced Tem Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam and set a pattern of intellectual, distant characters. He never needed to overact to command respect. But his meeting with director Hideaki Anno set the tone for the rest of his professional career.
In 1990, he played Gargoyle in Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. That sophisticated villain foreshadowed what was to come. Kiyokawa brought a cold elegance that few colleagues could match without slipping into caricature. So when Anno designed Neon Genesis Evangelion in 1995, the role of Kozo Fuyutsuki had a name of its own before recording sessions even began.
Fuyutsuki was the deputy commander who watched the end of the world with unsettling calm.
The actor held this role for twenty-six years, taking part in every iteration of the franchise. Whether it was the original series, the films of the late nineties, or the conclusion of the tetralogy in 2021, he was there. His voice aged along with the character (always under impeccable technical discipline) but kept the same moral authority over the chaos of the plot.
Outside the mecha universe, his range allowed for unexpected comedic roles. In 2014, he took on the role of Tippy in Is the Order a Rabbit? and showed he could sound like an angora rabbit without losing his essence. After all, the craft of a Japanese voice actor demands a precision that Kiyokawa mastered well above the industry average.
His work pace never slowed down with age.
In 2021, he took part in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, closing a chapter of his career tied to the most influential animated work of its time. On August 17, 2022, he died at the age of 87 from pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo. The Haikyo agency confirmed his death two days later in a brief statement that avoided any unnecessary sentimentality.
