Michael Torres Monge used to spend hours locked away in Quintana, a public housing complex in San Juan, measuring the rhythms of other people's tracks before daring to drop a single bar on SoundCloud. There were no cameras or cinematographers. Just a cheap microphone and an almost obsessive focus on meter.
The plan took years to pay off commercially.
In 2016 he released his first serious mixtape, El Final del Principio. It was raw rap, a statement of intent with no concessions to the dance floor that put his name on the radar of independent producers. Unlike other artists of his generation, Michael wrote his verses with almost cinematic sequences in mind, timing the silences with the coolness of someone editing a scene in the cutting room.
But the streaming industry has no patience for slow progress. To make the leap to the big leagues, he needed to adapt to the tempo of danceable reggaeton without losing the sharp cadence that set him apart from everyone else.
In 2020, Easy Money Baby arrived under the Casablanca label. That repertoire worked like a battering ram in the international market, earning the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart thanks to a collection of tracks where pop melody finally smoothed out the rough edges of street sound.
And then he decided to do exactly the opposite of what the executives were asking for.
In 2021 he released Lyke Mike, a raw work of twenty-three trap and drill tracks with no commercial hooks. The record label looked on warily at the move, since it deliberately gave up the easy formula of radio hits. The album sold noticeably less than its predecessor, but it cemented his credibility with genre purists.
Because in the urban music industry, speed of production devours the indecisive, and the counterattack didn't take long.
So the commercial comeback arrived in 2023. With La Vida Es Una, he delivered a catalog built for mass consumption, where the track LALA racked up more than a billion streams on Spotify after going viral across social media, climbing to the top of global charts outside the U.S. market.
In 2024 she doubled down on her aesthetic with La Pantera Negra, a conceptual work accompanied by audiovisual pieces shot with anamorphic lenses and cold lighting inspired by contemporary crime cinema.
Nobody improvises that much work.
To record the vocal takes for all twenty tracks of La Pantera Negra at studios in Miami, the artist used a Neumann U87 microphone run through a Tube-Tech CL 1B compressor, with no digital correction on the input signal, wrapping up the sessions after four weeks of uninterrupted twelve-hour days.
