Nam Yoon-su stands six feet tall and has dimples that the Korean industry tried to pigeonhole from day one. Before stepping in front of a film camera, he worked as a runway model in 2014 for publications like CeCi and GQ Korea. His looks pointed him toward friendly romantic comedies, but his instincts led him down much darker paths.
He made his fiction debut in 2018 with 4 Kinds of House.
In 2020, he landed the project that broke his good-guy image. In the Netflix series Extracurricular, he played Kwak Ki-tae, a violent and unpleasant high school bully that earned him a nomination for Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards. It was the moment casting directors realized his smile could look unsettling when lit the right way.
That juvenile delinquent role took him away from flat parts. Because Nam Yoon-su prefers characters who hide something behind an air of complete normalcy, in 2021 he agreed to join Beyond Evil, a psychological thriller where the narrative tension forced him to measure every gesture.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2021, the actor donned Joseon dynasty robes for The King's Affection. Playing Lee Hyun was a physical challenge because of the demands of Korean court protocol and sword handling. The production was a massive international hit and became the first Korean series to win an International Emmy in the best telenovela category.
That global exposure allowed him to choose projects with greater creative freedom. In 2022, he starred in Today's Webtoon alongside Kim Se-jeong, exploring the labor dynamics of digital platforms. But his biggest acting risk was still ahead, in a society as conservative as Seoul's.
In 2024, he took the lead role in Love in the Big City. In this series, he played Go Young, a gay writer who searches for his identity through different relationships over the course of a decade. The production sparked protests from conservative groups ahead of its premiere, but the actor defended the script as a necessary portrait of urban loneliness.
An up-and-coming actor's career is usually frantic, but Nam Yoon-su hit pause abruptly for a personal decision. In July 2024, he underwent major surgery to donate a kidney to his father, whose health had seriously deteriorated. The procedure forced him to turn down several contracts and focus on a strict physical recovery for months.
The Catholic hospital in Eunpyeong confirmed the success of the transplant.
After his recovery period, the actor resumed his professional commitments with a more selective profile. He doesn't pursue media overexposure or empty advertising deals. In 2024, his agency confirmed that his script selection process now prioritizes stories with a stronger social backdrop. Filming of Love in the Big City wrapped with an estimated budget of several million dollars spread across eight episodes directed by four different filmmakers.
