In 1986, a talent scout named Beth Boldt spotted a fifteen-year-old girl walking through Covent Garden. That girl was no ordinary aspiring model. Her arrival at London agencies broke a racial barrier that seemed as solid as granite in late twentieth-century Europe.
In 1988, she became the first Black woman to appear on the cover of French Vogue. It was a milestone that didn't come by chance but through pressure from designers such as Yves Saint Laurent. He threatened to pull his advertising from the magazine if they kept rejecting the London model because of her skin color.
And the world stopped.
During that decade, she was part of the group known as the Big Six. They were women who earned astronomical sums for walking a few meters across a wooden runway. But their ambition went beyond the catwalks of Paris or Milan. In 1991, she appeared in the music video for In the Closet by Michael Jackson, and the camera captured something still photos could never convey.
In 1996, she made her big-screen debut in Girl 6 under Spike Lee's direction. It wasn't a leading role, but it showed her that her face worked on film. The move into movies was a slow process, filled with prejudice from the film critics of the time.
In 2015, she joined the cast of Empire as Camilla Marks. It was a smart move to reach the homes of a new generation that no longer read print magazines. There, she proved she could handle sharp dialogue without losing her composure in front of the television cameras.
Shortly after, she appeared in American Horror Story: Hotel alongside Lady Gaga. She played a fashion editor who meets a violent end. And the gamble paid off.
The industry was never the same again.
In 2018 she received the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Behind the spotlight, however, her professional life centered on managing her own image as a global brand. Her net worth was estimated at over sixty million dollars during those years, thanks to fragrance contracts and direct image rights deals.
In 2023, she premiered the documentary series The Super Models on Apple TV+. In this production, she didn't just share her own testimony on camera. She also served as executive producer to oversee every shot and every reference to her legal or professional past. Controlling the narrative became her absolute priority after decades of being the object of others' gaze.
And she made it happen.
In 2024, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London opened the exhibition Naomi: In Fashion. The show brought together more than one hundred looks designed by names such as Azzedine Alaïa and Gianni Versace. Producing the event required two years of technical cataloguing of her personal textile archive, stored in climate-controlled warehouses.
