Naresh Agastya did not enter the industry with a famous last name that opened the doors of Hyderabad wide. His arrival was more noisy and somewhat bumpy, through a surreal comedy nobody expected. In 2019, the release of Mathu Vadalara put his face on every poster in the city and pulled him out of complete obscurity after short films.
He played a courier caught up in a web of murders and drugs. The film worked because Agastya knew how to handle the rhythm of physical comedy without falling into the exaggerated caricature that often floods mainstream Indian cinema. He made audiences empathize with an ordinary guy who just wanted to finish his shift without any trouble.
And the gamble paid off.
Before landing his first big hit, he spent years training in theater and low-budget independent projects. That foundation helped him avoid being easily typecast in comic roles after his debut. In 2021, he took the lead role in Senapathi, and the change of pace was clear to critics in his country.
But it was not a bed of roses. The film went straight to digital platforms due to the restrictions of the time, which limited its impact at the traditional box office. Still, his portrayal of a young, tormented police officer earned him the respect of noir directors in the Tollywood industry.
Agastya understands that silence speaks louder than shouting.
Because his style steers clear of the usual theatrics of the big stars of South Indian cinema. He prefers to work with gaze and the pauses between dialogue. In 2023, he shot Maya Lo to try to connect with a younger audience through a romantic plot that kept the restraint that has defined him since his beginnings.
His move into long-form series came on strong. In 2024, he starred in Paruvu for a streaming platform, and the script pushed him to explore social themes far rawer than usual. Playing a man on a desperate run driven by caste and honor posed a considerable physical challenge during the outdoor shoot.
His career path has been clear from the very beginning. He has preferred to alternate mid-budget films with stories that let him avoid always being the infallible hero who saves the day. In 2024, he also appeared in Dilwala, aiming to stay connected to pure, straightforward entertainment cinema.
But acting in Telugu cinema demands more than a good face. Agastya often spends weeks studying the background of his characters before stepping onto the set. This method has helped him survive in an industry where most young actors fade away after their second box-office flop.
The production of Paruvu required a total of 45 nights of filming at various locations in Andhra Pradesh.
