Luc Besson was walking through Manhattan when she noticed a hairdresser of Russian origin crossing the street. He wasn't looking for an actress with an extensive résumé but for a gaze that could hold a close-up opposite Jason Statham. Natalya Rudakova had no idea that this chance encounter would take her out of beauty salons and straight onto movie posters in cinemas across half the world.
And the French director didn't hesitate.
Besson paid for six months of acting classes to prepare her before the cameras started rolling. In 2008, the release of Transporter 3 served as a global showcase for her. The camera was captivated by her freckles and natural red hair. The film grossed more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, but Rudakova kept a cautious distance from the industry.
But the fame that comes with big action blockbusters can be a double-edged sword.
After that success, she decided her path would not involve accepting just any action script. In 2011, she shot A Novel Romance under the direction of Sean Hanish. It was an attempt to show she could handle denser dialogue, far from car chases in Eastern Europe. That independent production aimed for a far more intimate and unhurried tone.
That same year, she appeared in The One. These were projects that made the most of her physical magnetism but lacked the promotional budget of her debut. In 2014, she starred in the short film Waiting for a Train. It was a minimalist work that explored the gritty realism of New York City. Rudakova has always preferred the atmosphere of small sets to the large studio machinery of Los Angeles.
Her presence on screen later became intermittent.
In 2015, she worked on the film Before the Snow. Her career moved away from the spotlight to focus on roles where looks were not the only driving force of the plot. Her training in New York allowed her to explore theater and high-fashion modeling alongside her film appearances.
She appeared in the series Tell Me a Story in 2019, playing a woman connected to the art world. A year later, she appeared in an episode of Blindspot, where she played Kiva Gantz. She wasn't after constant exposure but projects that would let her live on the East Coast of the United States without the pressure of red carpets.
The original contract signed with EuropaCorp for her first film included an intensive 25-week acting training program in Paris. That technical training was the only academic foundation she received before facing a big-budget shoot. She currently divides her professional interests between design and independent production in New York.
In 2020, her activity in the industry's database recorded her last credited appearance in a nationally broadcast television production.
