Neil Diamond was selling songs for 50 dollars in New York's Brill Building while his college classmates were preparing to become doctors. He wasn't chasing glory or the spotlight. He just wanted to pay the rent in a city that devours those without a Plan B. In 1966, he signed with Bang Records and recorded Solitary Man with an acoustic guitar that sounded urgent.
It was his first serious warning sign.
And success was no accident. Diamond wrote with the radio in mind, but with the narrative structure of a screenwriter. His songs for The Monkees, like I'm a Believer, gave him the financial cushion he needed to stop being a behind-the-scenes songwriter. But he wanted the stage. In 1969, he released Sweet Caroline, and the song embedded itself in American pop culture in a way he himself could never fully explain.
In 1980, he decided music wasn't enough and agreed to star in The Jazz Singer. It was a biblical-scale disaster with critics. Analysts went after his flat performance and lack of acting rhythm (something they never forgave in Los Angeles circles).
Hollywood never forgave his audacity.
But the soundtrack to that movie sold more than five million copies in the United States alone. Diamond won the first Razzie for Worst Actor in history but took home a platinum record. That duality defined his career for decades. He was an artist the intellectual elite looked down on, while audiences filled stadiums on five continents.
In 2018, biology delivered its verdict. Diamond announced he had Parkinson's and that his world tours were over for good. The statement had no unnecessary drama. It was a practical decision to protect his health and avoid harming his public image on stage.
But the business didn't stop.
In 2022, the musical A Beautiful Noise premiered on Broadway, retracing his life through his songs. The production cost 20 million dollars and helped keep his personal brand alive without needing headlines to generate income. Diamond still receives royalty checks from a catalog that exceeds 130 million copies sold worldwide.
