Neil Sandilands is not your typical method actor who seeks critical approval in every shot. He was born in Randfontein in 1975 and learned his craft in South African television before anyone outside its borders knew how to spell his last name.
His move out of the country was a purely logistical decision.
In 2007, he decided Cape Town was too small for him. But he didn't land in Los Angeles with a million-dollar contract in hand. Instead, he arrived with the uncertainty of someone starting from scratch at an age when many are already thinking about early retirement. He took on minor and supporting roles until his face began to fit the profiles casting directors were looking for in the United States.
Global audiences got to know him thanks to Clifford DeVoe in the fourth season of The Flash in 2017. He played a villain who didn't need muscle because his brain was the ultimate weapon. Audiences connected with that surgical coldness that Sandilands delivers with an almost chilling precision on screen.
And the gamble paid off.
Then came General Abbot in the Netflix series Sweet Tooth in 2021. Here, the South African actor explored a far more visceral and gritty side, far from the immaculate suits of his earlier work. The character required an imposing physical presence, which Sandilands built through fixed stares and a voice that sounds like it comes from a deep cave.
Makeup took three hours to apply every morning.
Paul Greengrass cast him for News of the World in 2020. Sharing scenes with Tom Hanks requires a special kind of composure, and Sandilands held his ground playing Wilhelm Anthiel. He is the kind of actor who understands that silence communicates more than the most heartrending scream in a Western.
And then there's his musical side. In 2021, he released the album Sangoma, sung entirely in Afrikaans, because he has never wanted to shed the weight of his cultural heritage. Because for him, language is a tool of personal resistance against the homogenization of the Hollywood industry.
In 2024, he brought Koro to life in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It was a motion-capture job in which his voice and gestures had to cut through layers of digital effects to reach the audience. The film grossed 397 million dollars at box offices worldwide.
During the filming of his action scenes in Australia, the crew praised his ability to repeat complex takes without complaining about the extreme heat. Sandilands now divides his time between California and his homeland, where he oversees his own independent production projects. His contract for his next international production was signed for an amount that has not been disclosed to the specialized press.
