Ni Dahong failed the entrance exam for three drama schools before turning twenty.
He was told his face didn't fit the aesthetic standards of the time. But in 1982, the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing decided to give him a chance. He barely squeaked into that year's graduating class.
His professional debut came in 1985 with the film Wreaths at the Foot of the Mountain. He played a supporting role that barely caught the attention of the specialized press. For almost two decades, he moved on the fringes of major casts in the Chinese film industry.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1991, he worked under Zhang Yimou on Raise the Red Lantern. That collaboration was the start of a creative bond that lasted for decades. Ni Dahong didn't seek the spotlight, preferring to build characters through silence.
Many casting directors turned down his profile because of the bags under his eyes and his tired expression. He used that visual weariness to give his villains an absolute coldness. In 2007 he played Yan Song in the series Ming Dynasty in 1566.
His portrayal of an eighty-year-old minister when he was only forty-seven amazed the industry. His name soon started coming up in the offices of the country's top producers.
His method is built on economy of gestures. He's often criticized for having a frozen face on screen, but his silences say more than other actors' screaming. In 2010, he appeared in Three Kingdoms as Sima Yi and raised the bar for historical productions.
But his big moment was still to come.
His social phenomenon came in 2019 with the family drama All is Well. His role as a selfish, manipulative father spawned thousands of memes on social media. That year he won the Magnolia Award for Best Actor after decades of working behind the scenes.
In 2021, he reunited with Zhang Yimou for Cliff Walkers. In this espionage film, he played a relentless intelligence chief. The movie grossed more than $180 million at the box office worldwide.
Nobody expected that impact.
In 2023, he starred in Love Never Ends, playing an elderly man who finds love in the final stage of his life. A year later, in 2024, he appeared in the film Article 20. During 2025, his schedule included filming the period series The Legend of the Condor Heroes.
Filming for his role in the series The First Shot in 2024 took place entirely on location in Jilin Province, where temperatures were below freezing.
